There's An Answer (by INorniaii Vincent Pealc and _ Ruth Stafford IValt*} Women Preacher*? Q. I need some answers about women preachers. Is it right, according to the Scriptures, for them to be head of a church? A. We believe that it is right, and are not aware of any valid conflict with Scripture. The fact that preaching has, historically, been almost altogether a function of men does not mean that there is any reason why a woman may not also perform this function. • „ Doesn't Fear God Q. I am a 76-year-old retired man, active in my church and have believed in God all my life. There is one thing that puzzles me. In the Bible one very frequently sees the admonition, "Fear God." I know God loves us, but I find it very difficult, if not impossible, to fear one who loves me. I do stand in awe of all of His creations. Can you explain it to me? A I never liked the phrase, "the fear of God." And after much study and thought I believe that what it really means is a profound respect for God. Love and respect go together much better than do love and fear. Dlflflcalt to Like an Alcoholic Wife Q. I thought I was a good and considerate husband during 18 years of marriage, but my wife thought I was not. We discussed things only in anger at the tops of our voices. Her way of coping with my bad habits was with alcohol. Now she has joined AA and is not drinking. I have realized through Alanon that my actions were not in the best interests of a mature and happy marriage. But now my wife is distant and very unloving to me. I still love her, but sometimes I find it very difficult to like her. Is there anything I should do or say to improve the situation? A. You have written a very significant phrase: "I still love her, but sometimes I find it very difficult to like her." Understanding is very important. An alcoholic can be acutely sensitive and often there is a carry-over of unhappy attitudes even when the individual becomes "dry." Patience, thoughtfulness, esteem and loving concern should in time mitigate your wife's conflicting emotional holdovers. Consumer Problem In New Energy Proposal Past 65 No Help For Unlisted Number The U.S. Department of Energy is considering a new rule governing the distribution of petroleum products that could create hardships for consumers, according to Frank Beal, director of the Illinois In stitute of Natural Resources. The proposed rule defines a process - "Downward certification" - in which the monthly supply of gasoline given to a wholesale marketer would be reduced if any retail gasoline station served by the wholesaler should close down. The downward cer tification would occur im- m e d i a t e l y a n d automatically. It then would be up to the refinery or oil company from which the wholesaler purchases fuel to determine where to distribute the unclaimed gasoline. "The overall demand for petroleum products rarely, ByCarlRiblet, Jr. Question -- "How can I find someone whose only connection to me is an unlisted telephone number that I have lost?" -- David B. Answer -- Once upon a time Bell system operators would contact the unlisted phone subscriber to learn if he or she wanted to talk with the inquirer. Not any morel Bell says its operators will not contact an unlisted number for any reason except great emergency, because it would be an in vasion of privacy. Look which pot is calling the kettle black! The Bell system is notorious for invading the privacy of its employees by monitoring employees' phone conversations. But there is another way David can attempt to find his friend. He can go to the post office and ask for help. In smaller cities the Postal Service has sometimes helped to locate people who receive mail and are known to them. Question -- "You wrote that people over 65 should pay tax on all income except SS. That's unture. We don't have to file until the income exceeds $6,400. You had better write a correction. " -- K.O.D. Answer -- K.O.D. is right and I will. An error was if ever, decreases for any given geographic area within Illinois and...the closing of retail sales outlets is primarily indicative of a shift in demand patterns from one supplier to another within the same geographic area," Beal noted in a letter to the U.S. Department of Energy. 'made in an attempt to simplify. If oneof a couple is over 65, the couple must file a tax return only if inncome, after deductions, is $6,400 or more. If both are over 65, then an income tax return must be filed only if the income is over $7,400. Question -- "My doctor limits me to one egg every other day. I boil it for five minutes. When I peel it, chucks of the egg meat come off with the shell. I read that's because the chickens aren't fed right. What can an old lady do to get an egg that is peeled, yet whole?" -- Adele H. Answer -- I asked a restaurant chef who then parted with his peeled-egg secret. Adele should take a thumb tack or heavy sewing needle and gently pierce the large end of the egg. Then boil it. The little hole will allow gas in the egg to escape while boiling. After boiling, she should plunge the egg into cold water and then peel. The shell will come off easily and the meat of the egg won't stick to the shell and be pulled off in chunks. It works! I tired it. Do you feel there is need for my service and could you help channel my interests into real service?" -- Dennis M. Answer -- Since Dennis is young, almost a kid to us elders, and a licensed real estate broker, he must have easy access to information from real estate sources that will help him better than I can. At any rate, I don't get involved in money making schemes. Question -- "I am 62, a widow and retired Army nurse, and bored. I do all the things such as adult education, bingo, visit my children and grandchildren once in a while and listen to gossip by the widows at the adult housing couples where I live. The gossip is mostly back-biting and I am sick of it. For years I've worked among men and I am not geared to this kind of life. Where do I meet men - even a pen pal? I am not especially marriage- minded. Freedom is great." -- Elizabeth P. Answer -- If Elizabeth wants to meet men she must go where men are in good supply -- unmarried men. They aren't so easy to uncover at 62. The best places might be a 60-to-70 singles club, parks, Golden Age meetings and gatherings where elderly citizens go to play games, read, dance, work at hob bies, and meet others.
