Warriors Overcome Slowdown To Beat Cary-Grove In Overtime 48-44 By Dick Rabbitt The Warriors overcame a Cary Grove slowdown on Friday night to win 48 to 44 in overtime. The win coupled with Crystal Lake South's Joss to Dundee, put the Warriors in a second place tie with the Gators in the Fox Valley. Dundee clinched the title with their 58 to 55 win over the Gators. The Trojans grabbed the opening tip off, and began to play keep away with the Warriors for the first three minutes of the ball game. Finally they scored and led 2 to 0. The Warriors brought the ball down the floor, but lost it, and again the Trojans began to play keep away. Again they scored, and the same thing happened. At-jthe 1:45 mark of the period the Trojans led the Warriors 8 to 0. Finally Len Jensen hit a 15 footer and the Warrior we re on the-board, but seconds later Meyer countered for the Trojans and the Trojans led 10 to 2 at the end of the first period. The first period slowdown of the,Cary crew seemed to bother the Warriors. Although they had the shots, they just didn't fall, and they became frustrated in the process. In the second period the Trojans began to play basketball as it was sup posed to be played, and the Warriors took the challenge. Anderson and Jphnson each hit the hoop, and Greve's charity toss, along with Johnson's basket had the Warriors within three, 12 to 9. After a couple of Trojan baskets, Jensen and Sroka countered and the Warriors trailed at halftime 19 to 15. Jensen Takes Charge The third period saw the Warriors come to life. Bob Greve hit a 10 footer, and after Meyer dropped one for the Trojans, Johnson countered with a layup, and then Len Jensen, fine senior guard of the Warriors, took control of the game. The young lad leading the fast break, hit three quick baskets sandwiched in with a basket by Barry Anderson and the Warriors led at the midway mark 29 to 22. Then a cold spell hit the Warriors, but at the one minute mark of the period Jensen again hit a 10 footer, and the Warriors led 31 to 26 going into the final eight minutes. Jensen in the period had five baskets for 10 pts. In the final period the Warriors and TYojans ex changed basket after basket, and with Jensen's two free throws at the 2:15 mark the Warriros still maintained a six point bulge 41 to 35. After the Trojan's Meyer came through with 2 baskets, Chris Freund on a beautiful tip at 1:00 kep the Warrior lead 43 to 39. Leading with just seconds to go the Warriors allowed Meyer, fine Cary forward, to break through the lane and with just one second remaining tied the game at 43. In the overtime, Len Jensen stole a Trojan pass, MARCH SPECIAL REG. 3.351 Car Cut. .SPEC. 2.39 REG. 3.501 t Parka.. SPEC. 2.501 REG. 4.001 ITYPARTA. SPEC.3.00| REG. 4.2! DOWN Jacket . Meyer made" a free throw for the Trojans at 2:13, and then Bob Greve intercepted a Trojan pass and went in unmolested for his second basket of the overtime and the Warriors were in the drivers seat. With the Trojans set up for a play, a line violation gave the Warriors the ball, and Tony Sroka's free throw with 7 seconds remaining sealed the Warrior victory. Warrior fans ass&ell as trojan fans could ask a lot of questions about the game. After a 10 to 2 first period lead, why did Trojan coach Jim Condill elect to come out and try and run with the Warriors. His slowdown had the Warriors baffled, their shooting was off, and his team had the better of it for the first eight mintues. On the other hand, the Warriors seemed to be-in a daze. With tournament time coming up, they are going to have to regroup and play better basketball. Even though they won, and oornmitted few turnovers, it isn't the same Warrior team we saw a couple of weeks ago. Let' shope they snap out of it, and take the Tigers this week, and then on to the regional. Hughes lost to Greg Beck of New Trier East who went on to take third place and qualify for the state tournament. Neither Warrior had an opportunity to wrestle back during the tourney. The wrestling season is now officially over for another year. The singlets are being washed and in ventoried, the training diets are already broken. But some pleasing statistics and memories remain for the coaches, wrestlers and fans to feel good about. The varsity squad ended their season with an 8-9 overall record and a 3-4 conference record. This is a definite improvement over the past few years. Five Wrestling Warriors ended this season with strong winning records. They are: Ed Hughes (senior) 27-4; Brian Wrona (junior) 28-8; Mark Betancourt (senior) 21-7-1; Dave Ramer (senior) 23-9-2 and Vic Betancourt (junior) 15-$. Ed Hughes was 9-0 in the Fox Valley Conference and Mark Betancourt was 8- 2. A new record of 16 season pins was set by Hughes this year. The next highest number of falls were earned by Brian Wrona with 8. Mark Betancourt holds this season's record for the fastest fall, gained in 21 seconds. That balanced scoring that has eluded the Kies' squad on several occasions this year cotinued during the third quarter. Rick Neiss pumped in seven points; Zimbrick had six; Dixon scored five; Valentin netted three; and Jakubicek hit a field goal. Rick SzumlaS played sensational ball in the final 'period, hitting five for six free throws and both of his field goal attempts for nine points. It was Tom "Doc" Fowler whose scoring tied and then broke the previous John sburg record of most points scored in a game. Fowler was at the free throw line with the Skyhawks score at 89, one point short of tying the old record of 90 points. A smooth delivery by Fowler cleared the net and the record was tied. Another successful free throw set the new mark at 91. Moments later junior Bob Baker added icing to the cake by making two more free throws. The new record is now at 93. Zimbrick was high pointy man for the evening with 19. Dixon had 16; Tom Schoenig sank 15; Valentin had 13; and Neiss and Szumlas each had 9. The Skyhawk victory was the 100th win for Johnsburg Coach Bob Kies. In his six WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27.1«M years of coaching he has had only one losing season and 46 defeats.
