PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 29,1980 by Gerry Johnson Lamplighter of Broadway Leads Illuminating Life Did you ever wonder who designed those gigantic, ani mated billboards in Times Square, including the fa mous Camel smoke ring sign? His name is Donald Leigh, a 72 year old native of Alabama who arrived in New York at the height of the Depression and opened his own advertising firm. His first client, the St. Moritz hotel, gave Leigh a room, office space and food in exchange for Leigh's ad vertising expertise. "The barter deal we worked out was probably more valuable to me than if I had been paid cash for my services," Leigh told a writ er from The National Coun cil on the Aging. Between 1933 and the beginning of World War II, Leigh's outdoor signs revo lutionized what had been done in the past, both in terms of size and special effects. "Some of those signs were nine stories high," Leigh, recalled. "I did one for Four Roses in the ceii^ ter of Times Square that had 100 foot high neon roses." Then there was one for A & P coffee with a 25 foot steaming coffee cup; Bromo Seltzer with effervescence action; Ballantine Beer with a clown pitching quoits to form Ballantine's three-ring trademark. The Camel sign was in stalled in December of 1941 and lasted for 24 years, spreading to 12 other cities during its tenure. During the war, when the government-imposed black out curtailed Leigh's out door advertising business, he served in the Navy as a lieutenant, producing ani mated training aids. One of his shows ran at Rockefeller Center for over three years and is now at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Vi A^jer the - war ..ended, Leigh was "back in business, lighting up Broadway with newer and more spectacular signs. One for Super Suds blew 3,000 soap bubbles a minute and he created steaming irons for two dif ferent manufacturers. When New York made Leigh the Chief of City Decor for the bicentennial, Leigh designed red, white and blue lighting for a num ber of buildings, including the Empire State Building and changed Broadway to the; Avenue of the States, decorating it with flags from different states. "During that period I met Harry Hemsley, a real es tate investor who owns the Empire State Building, among others," Leigh said. "Since then, I've been light ing many of the buildings he owns, including the en trance to the new Palace Hotel." Leigh tried retirement once but it wasn't for him. "I moved to Florida, the whole bit," he said, "but I realized it wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be." Instead of retiring, Leigh decided to slow down a bit by selling part of his busi ness and concentrating on the creative side of lighting. "I'm a great believer in using the abilities God gave you," Leigh said. "You can slow down but you don't have to retire. Work keeps the rhythm going." The Canadian Falls of Niagara has carved out a "plunge basin" 192 feet deep. ARE * YOU MOVING? CONTRARY TO popu lar belief, a person's per sonality remains relatively stable throughout his life. According to Paul T. Costa Jr. of the National Institute on Aging, personality, rather than age determines how a person copes with major biological and social events, such as menopause, starting a family and retiring. THE AMERICAN RED CROSS and the American Pharmaceutical Association have developed a "Personal Drug Information Check list" to help people keep track of different medica tions. The checklist has room for information on up to five different medications. The checklist is available at pharmacies or from local Red Cross chapters. CHURCH OF CHRIST 401 N.
