Year Books were distributed, and the roster of activities for the year were discussed when the Marcia Mary Ball Circle of the United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist church of McHenry, met in the church parlor, for the February meeting. Delicious desserts were served by hostess, Cleda McCracken and members'of the Circle read, very in­ teresting articles and poems as part of the meditations, which everyone enjoyed. The women always bring articles to share and discussions follow, which make for an enjoyable get- together for the group. The Marcia Mary Ball Circle always has the Welcome Mat out Tor ladies in the congregation who would like to attend, par­ ticularly those who have no other Circle affiliations, and would like to become in­ volved. The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 4 at noon in the church parlor. Club Views Slide Program Cleda and Leonard Mc- Crackep were in charge of the program for the evening when the Friendship club met for their potluck dinner and meeting in February. They introduced Betty Zamastil who showed slides of her stay in the Nether lands, which were very nice dnd her narration was very interesting. After the delicious meal, President Elmer Stange called the meeting to'order with words of welcome, and compiments to the ladies for the dinner. Mary Rose's Meditations were interesting, most appropriate and enjoyed by all. During the business meeting, a letter was read from the Valley Hi Nursing home., for, McHenry county expressing appreciation to the group for the birthday gifts for their residents. Happy birthday was sting to all members celebrating birthdays in February. The next meeting of the club will be Saturday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m., in the new Fellowship hall, when Mary Butler and Mabel Thomas will have the program. Conserve and Save Senior citizens on fixed in­ comes need all the tips they can get when it comes to cut­ ting costs during these days of rising inflation. Since heat­ ing water usually equals about 15 per cent of the average energy bill, let's consider a method of reducing spending by conserving hot water -- it's normally taken too much for granted! While you obviously can't do without hot water, there are several ways to conserve it so that energy requirements and costs will be less. Initially, contact a reliable heating and plumbing con­ tractor to ensure you have the proper size heating-unit tank for your household. Relocate the unit, if neces­ sary, as close as possible to the area of major hot water use. Use small-diameter pipes for hot wat^r supply lines to minimize heat loss and to re­ duce the volume of trapped water. A thermostat setting of 110 to 120 degrees Farenheit on a water heater is suffi­ cient if you don't have an automatic dishwasher. A set ting of 140 degrees is recom mended if you do have one. Temperatures higher than that tend to shorted the life of a glass-lined tank. Governor Thompson proclaimed Feb. 24 through March 1 to be Homemakers Extension Week in Illinois, on Jan. 8, 1980. Mayor Stanek signed the same proclamation for McHenry on Feb. 20. Homemakers Extension association is sponsored through the University of Illinois Cooperative Ex­ tension service. The "Home and Hearth" McHenry's unit,bounded by Lois Jacobs and Julie Pieroni, held its first meeting Oct. 26, 1970 in the home of Mrs. Jacobs. The purpose of the meetings is to obtain homemaker's education through informal adult participation. Volunteer leaders are members who receive subject matter training from the Extension staff; they prepare and present the appropriate material to the entire club. Twice a year the Co.unty Home Economics Adviser presents a lesson. Members from each unit suggestions on topics for programs to be discussed at monthly meetings, .such as Consumer Concerns, Family Life, Energy, Clothing and Textiles, Food and Nutrition. Homemakers also help sponsor and participate in special events such as craft workshops, cultural art fcur and international dinners. The homemakers also work with the 4-H youth in the McHenry area. During H.E.A. Week the Home and Hearth had a craft night to learn broom stick lace, macrame and stuffed Christmas trees and' made final arrangements for the high school voters registration. It will be the second year for this registration and it pleased the unit to be asked to repeat this project. Homemakers Extension association is open to everyone and more in­ formation can be obtained by contacting Mrs. Ben H (Lois) Jacobs, Ringwood road. Musical Show Planned At a recent Birthright business meeting members voted to accept the proposal of A1 Smith to produce and direct, for Birthright, a family oriented musical show. Mr. Smith said he plans a variety of singing and dancing to make this Spring revue an exciting event. During the next few months, plans will be made by volunteers to attend the international Birthright convention in South Bend, Ind., June 13, 14 and 15. The director, Tina Gorski, announced a training session to be held for new volun­ teers. Also, all experienced workers are expected to attend a refresher course, which will include a showing of the Wilke slides. Sue Grant, chairman of the provisions committee, announced an effort is being made to stock infant clothing, especially 6-12 month undershirts, crib blankets, cribs, and mat­ tresses. "Of course, any baby items are welcome," Mrs. Grant added, "but requests for necessities have increased over the winter months. V Local Girl Initiated JANETTE HAYES Miss Janette Hayes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs William Hayes, 5008 Westwood drive, McHenry, recently became an initiated member of Alpha Gamma Delta, an international fraternity for college and university women. Miss Hayes is a freshman at Carroll college, Waukesaha, Wis. Founded in May, 1904, Delta was the first women's fraternity to establish a total of nine chapters within the first five years of its existence in major universities \and colleges. Also it was one of the first social fraternities to adopt an altruistic project on the national level. In the past year, Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta has received the Achievement Honor Roll, Executive Council award and Ail-Time Achievement Honor Roll for un­ dergraduates. Beta Epsilon chapter also placed first in All School Sing at Carroll college and received the Chi Omega award for most civil and service projects in the community. Benefit For Library The McHenry _ Woman's club cordially invites everyone to attend their annual Card Party, for the benefit of the McHenry Public library, at St Patrick's hall Thursday March 6 at 12:30 p.m. Cake and coffee will be served and Mrs. Erich Dorsch, chairman would appreciate all members donating a cake. The Woman's club started the library many years ago, and has contributed yearly with the proceeds from a card party. The public is invited to attend and tickets may be purchased from club members or at the door.
