\J$ On The Sidelines By Dick Robb )! Warriors Play Woodstock In Regional Meet Next Week PAGE 7 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1980 :£ Well the basketball season is rounding down to the final games. Tonight the Warriors host the Tigers from Crystal •:£ :":i: Lake in the season final. It will also be Parents Night. The £ parents of the varsity players, cheerleaders, and senior # members of the Pom Pon §quad will be honored. It is a >£ way the Athletic Department shows a small sign of ijij appreciation for the work and effort that the parents put |:j forth throughout the season. This happens just once a & year, and it is the hope of all concerned that the parents $ & will put away their own personal activities on that night $ and join with their son or daughter this night in which they & want to honor Mom and Pop. Gary Gray's girls basketball team had two nice wins the $ past week. Defeating Dundee and Woodstock was by no $ means ah easy task. Senior SueHutchinson went on a $ scoring rampage getting 51 pts. in the two games. The >:;• girls are playing good basketball, and those two nice >:j: i:|: victories should have them prepared for the final games |i; of the regular season and the regional. Speaking of the regional, don't forget the Warriors {day M tiie Blue Streaks in the Woodstock regional next Wednesday night at 7:30. The Warriors have a score to >:•: gi settle as they lost a heartbreaker a couple of weeks ago to ;!;! the Streaks, that literally knocked them out of the & conference race. The snowstrom on Monday cancelled a lot of Class A :& regionals throughout the state including the regional at ® Johnsburg. With a lot of the Private League teams in the ;i|: Johnsburg regional, it was impossible for them to get to >:•: £: the game. Again we were lucky and escaped the snow. ft That statement will get me some flak from my so-called ;i;i snow buff friends. The game of the week took place back in the 1957-58 season. The Warriors beat a good Warren of Gurnee club ;i|: in the North Suburban by the score of 73 to 60. Matt $ $ Eichinger Warrior guard led all scorers with 19 pts. Ed % Cepulis picked up 15 as the Warriors put the game away in $ the final period. NORTH SUBURBAN MCHENRY VS. LAKE REGION SPORTS CAR CLUB Lake Region Sports Car Club (LRSCC) drivers won five of the eight divisions in the "Winter Sprints" held on the frozen waters of Twin Lakes. Wis. last Sunday. Thirty-seven entrants from eight sports car clubs of Illinois and Wisconsin participated in the event. The course consisted of a large oval of less than a mile in circumference, with numerous pylons marking the route. The cars ran one at a time, and each driver received five runs of a lap each. It was a flying start, and in many cases, a sliding finish. About the only event LRSCC failed to win was the Fastest Time of Day (FTD). Paul Musschoot of Lake Region was edged out of the FTD by L. Claypool of the Chicago Corvair Enthusiast club when he finished the course in a time of 63.95 behind the wheel of his Corvair. Musschoot made it close though, as he captured Class "A" with a 64.73 ride in his Corvette. Other Lake Region members capturing first place wins were Scott Johnson as he drove his Datsun 240Z to victory in Class "B" in a time of 67.64. Vice-president of the club, Dick Fournier of Crystal SHAMROCK CLEANERS Complete Dry Cleaning Service! Conveniently Located in the McHenry Market Place Shopping Center 4400 W. Rte. 120 McHenry (815) 385-1944 Lake, added Class "C" to the list when he edged his Opel into victory by a half a second with a time of 65.31. The "H" class and ladies division were won by Honda driven by Mike and Mary Jane Fernandez. Mike stopped the clock at 65.88 and his wife toured to the win in 71.47. Also finishing for LRSCC were McHenry drivers Steve Arnold in a VW Rabbit, Sal Cardella in a MG Midget aqd Wayne Gaylord in a MGB. The next event will be a Crossword Puzzle Rallye on Sunday, March 9. Titled, "Get rid of the winter blahs", it will be the club's first rallye event this year. Though it will be on the easy side, (to aid invited guests) it should also help prepare the members for the weekender rallye planned for April. Anyone interested in the March 9 rallye should call 385-8688 or (312) 639-6424. LRSCC meets on the third Thursday of each month at the American Legion on Ringwood road in McHenry. Meetings begin at 8:15 p.m. and all sports car en thusiasts are invited to at tend. Class "A" Regional In Progress At Johnsburg Curt Norgard, Alden- Hebron's 6-1 senior, forward, scored 41 points to pace his team in an 80-52 romp of Ida Crown Academy during the first night of the IHSA Class "A" Regionals hosted by Johnsburg high school. Harvard defeated North Shore Country Day School 89-51 in the first game of the evening. Both Harvard and A l d e n - H e b r o n w e r e scheduled to meet in the second round of the tour nament Thursday at 7 p.m. The Johnsburg Regional scheduled was altered because winter snows caused the cancellation of Monday's games. Johnsburg was scheduled to meet Lake Forest Academy Wed nesday, and Richmond- Burton was to meet Roycemore at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winners of those two contests were scheduled to play each other Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The Johnsburg squad was not at full strength as it met Lake Forest Academy Wednesday. Senior star Chris Dixon was recovering from influenza, and five players on the squad had been suspended because of training rule violations. In Tuesday night action, neither Alden-Hebron nor Harvard had any trouble with their opponents. Alden- Hebron jumped into a 19-12 first quarter lead and im proved it with each remaining period. Norgard pumped in 16 field goals and nine of 11 free throws on his way to 41 points, a new scoring record for games played in the Johnsburg high school gymnasium. Norgard was thy only player on his team to score in the double figuresv Rich Heischman, Barry Nichols, and Dave Slavin each had 7 points, and Charlie Wightman and Kevin Winters each hit for 6 points. Marc Lawrence, Har vard's 6-6 superstar «center, led his squad with 24 points as the Hornets defeated the North Shore Raiders. Chris Prima had 15, Ken Haldeman scored 14, Daryl Nolen hit 13, and Dan King netted 12 in Harvard's well- balanced scoring effort. The championship game is tonight at 7:30 p.m. Among the earliest broad casters on AM radio were educational institutions.
