Dr. Gregory Daly runs twelve miles each day getting readyvfor the famous Boston Marathon, which he is planning to enter. He has been in the Marathon previously, so he knows about getting in shape for such a strenuous event. We'll be watching the T.V. coverage to see a Wonder Laker come across the line. SPECIAL DAYS Happy birthday to Dana Achieb of Oakwood Shores March 9 and to Chip Cynowa, one of our avid bowlers on March 13. SPRING IS ON ITS WAY Something very en couraging was mentioned on T.V. MARCH U in JOSKI'II COOLS staff psychologist --.news from the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic of McHenry County. (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - Your Five Year Plan"). In business, a frequent question asked; of prospective employees is "What is your five year plan? Where do you want to be in the next five years?" All of us have short term goals-planning vacations, social events, projects around the house-but few people have formalized personal, long term goals that can add meaning and motivation to their daily lives. If asked, "What is your personal five year plan?" most people would probably say, "I don't know" or "I don't have one. I'm having PAGE 19 - PLAINDEALER • enough trouble just planning day to day." If, however, these same people were given a week to think of and formalize their plans, goals, ideas, and dreams for the next five years, they would un doubtedly be shocked to learn that they have an almost endless variety of ideas to improve the quality of their lives. It is Impossible to change the "drudgery" and "sameness" of everyday life in a week, or even a month, but with specific long term goals to work towards, people can begin a process of change that is directed to more meaningful existence. The process of setting long term goals sounds simple, and indeed it is ; it only takes some thought, patience and WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 1M0 a belief in oneself. The goals must be reasonable and practical, not so grandiose as to be unreachable. One very good way of approaching this project is to take some time, either by yourself or with someone close to you and just think of plans that may have been vague ideas, but have never been formalized. It is im portant to write the ideas down and date them. Your "five year plan" will be changed and revised over the five years, but it will change your life, as it has changed mine. • • » • Np teacher can do much with the brain of a student who doesn't want to learn.
