SECTION 2 - PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALEE - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5.19M Urge Preparedness For Possible Spring Floods County board chairman, Richard O. Klemm, has reminded citizens of the possibilities of Spring floods. While the probability and magnitude of Spring flooding For this year cannot' be predicted at this time, under normal conditions one can assume there will be some flooding somewhere in Illinois. Since the county is par ticipating in the National Flood Insurance program, Klemm pointed out that a flood insurance policy can be purchased from any in surance agent who sells property insurance. Flood insurance policies cover all direct loss by a flood, which is defined as a "general or temporary condition of partial or complete inun dation of normally dry land areas." This definition includes the overflow of a body of water such as a lake, stream, ditch, etc.; the unusual or rapid accumulation or runoff of surface water; sewer back-up or a high water table that occur during and are due to surface flooding. The policy offers low-cost, federally-subsidized cov erage against damage by flooding. For example, a single family homeowner can purchase a $10,000 policy on his home's contents for only $35 per» year. Any building within the corporate limits can be insured, whether or not it is in the floodplain. Structural coverage can be purchased for any walled and roofed building, in cluding a mobile home af fixed to a permanent site. The contents of'homes and buildings are also insurable, even if the structure itself is not insured. It is very im portant to remember that there is a 5-day waiting period before coverage on flood insurance policies goes into effect. Klemm asked local residents to do three things. First, check the floodplain map available for their use at the county building. This will tell then if they are in a flood-plain area. Second, contact their insurance agent, or any insurance agent who sells property insurance. Third, write the Illinois Division of Water Resources for a free copy of a new, publication, "Protecting Your House from Flood Damage." It contains information and instructions to help people before, during and after a flood - large or small. Anyone wishing a free copy of this new publication can write Illinois Division of Water Resources, Local Floodplain Programs, 300 North State Street - Room 1010, Chicago, HI., 60610.
