Ask Farmer Vote For March Corn Checkoff McHenry county farmers were urged to join farmers throughout Illinois in voting for the corn checkoff referendum March 6. Elmer Hill, Union farmer who is chairman of the McHenry C6unty Farm Bureau marketing committee, said the checkoff is an op portunity for farmers to contribute enough funds to have an impact on what can be achieved through more research and market development. He cited the success of the * soybean checkoff initiated a half dozen years ago to in dicate how prices can be helped and overseas markets established. __ "Corn is about where soybeans were 10 years ago in terms of market deve lopmen t - and promotion," says Allan Aves, Kirkland grain farmer who is president of the Amer ican Soybean association. Farmers are being asked to vote for a V* cent a bushel checkoff at the first point of sale. This is a voluntary program, and a refund can be obtained. Voting takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ex tension Service office, .on Route 120, near Marian Central high school. To pass, the issue requires a majority ' vote of all who vote throughout the stage's/ 102 counties. In order to expedite the checkoff, a board of direc tors is being chosen at the time the corn checkoff vote takes place so if a favorable vote takes place the board can be organized, officers elected andthe machinery to establish the checkoff ac tivated.
