Some of you will find that the little New in your neighborhood? And still searching for the grocery store and more closet space? It's my job to help you feel at home fast. As your WELCOME WAGON Hostess I can supply answers to your new neighborhood questions and bring a basket of gifts to delight your family. Hundreds of people like you in McHenry hove called me. I hope you will, too. Judy Wallace 344-3498 red sticker has the letters MAR imprinted. If this is what you find, it means your license plates will expire March 31, and you will have to get the new GREEN sticker (which is being sold now) to update your license plates and keep your car legal to drive. These little GREEN stickers are currently available at some local business firms or at the Secretary of States' office. Should you be caught driving with expired license plates, the fine is rather hefty, and there are always court costs to add to the fine, not to mention the fact that you will still have to buy the proper sticker. It's just not worth it financially to forget to update your license plates. Those of you who drive McHenry County Weather 344-3100 * trucks instead of cars don't have to worry about expired license plates yet, however, you do have to worry about the safety test sticker that is pasted right on your wind shields in front of you. Look at these carefully.; on the bottom of the sticker which faces inside the cab, you Will see a date. That date is the last day that sticker is valid, and you should have a new sticker before then. If that part of the sticker is worn off or unreadable, there is a large number also printed on the sticker. This is the numerical month in which the sticker expires; No. 3 for March, etc. Make plans to have your trucks tested a week or so prior to; the last day for the sticker, since there is always a mad rush on the last day to getrlegal. The small number of testing stations are always overloaded on that day and you may not get tested in time. There is also a rather large fine and court cost for being caught with an expired safety test sticker, and you will still have to get the test done too, so it's not worth the extra cost to forget it. In McHenry, the only place I know to get the test is one of the auto dealers, but there are other places throughout the county. Some of you will have recently received a notice from the Police department (in your mailbox or on the door) stating that you have not complied with the City Ordinance which states you must have your street ad dress numbers on your home in a place that is readable from the street. Do not get all upset thinking you have received a **w?rrir •v THEREIS : , SVBSTITVT ; HONEST* experience * • * * * * * • * • * * * * * * * • * * * * • * * * • * * * • * * * * * • • * * * * * • • * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * • • * * * * * * * * • * > * * * * * * * Jf * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * » * * » • * * * RETAIN THEODORE J. P.O. Kn\ 4Wt. \NotuKlotk. III. MNWK ticket or are being arrested This is merely a warning that you haven't complied with the ordinance, and that you should do so im mediately. Also, there are going to be some of you who will receive this notice even though you already have the numbers oh the house. The reason for this is twofold. If you received the notice during the night time hours, the officer used his spotlight to check the house and missed seeing the numbers. This should be rare, since the spotlights are very bright and light up the front of the house quite well/ What is more likely is the numbers were hidden, unintentionally, behind a bush or tree, or under a. awning, and were not seen by the officer from the road. Having the numbers hidden is just as bad as not having them at all since the office could not find them when there wasn't an emergency, and would not be able to find them when there was one. -This time we got the correct address from your license plates on your cars, or through a book which lists all the street addresses, much like a telephone book, but by street name instead of name and phone number. This is always possible for us to do, however in an emergency, it takes precious time which could have been used to help with the problem. The ordinance stated that numbers must be at least three inches tall, and should be a contrasting color from the house (if the house is white, make the numbers black). We are checking every street and house in the city one by one, so please get this taken care of as soon as possible. Thank you. See you next week. " With energy costs con tinuing to climb-and the OPEC stranglehold con tributing to America's hostage situation-farmers interested in exploring ways to become more energy independent will gather at DeKalb March 13 for a "Food, Fiber and Fuel" seminar. Purpose of the seminar is to help farmers obtain first hand information about farm stills from farmers with experience in the production of ethanol alcohol and to tell participants about the economics of alcohol production. Information on advance registration fee should be obtained from the DeKalb County^Farm Bureau, 315 North Sixth street, DeKalb, Illinois 60115. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and the program opens with a special film produced by Archer Daniels Midland and the National Corn Growers entitled, "The Gasohol Story". This seminar is being sponsored by the National Corn Growers association in cooperation with the DeKalb County Corn Growers association. Rich Walter, DeKalb farmer and president of the DeKalb County Corn Growers, is chairman. Featured program par ticipants will include two farmers with experience in on-farm stills; a national authority on gasohol; a manufacturer of stills and the president of the DeKalb, 111., firm that late last year announced plans to produce 5.6 million gallons of alcohol at two locations, each from corn. Bob Soleta, Professional Farmers of American executive who worked for the National Gasohol commission for several years, will headline the morning program. Soleta said this nation must learn to .identify its sources of renewable and unrenewable sources of energy and develop an energy program based on principles. "The nonrenewable or fossilized energies, as coal, oil and natural gas, should be considered stored energy reserves and treated as cash savings of a family, industry or country," be began. "Such reserves should be used only to the extent they help create productive renewable energy systems. Continuously renewed energies of sun, wind, vegetable conversion and the like should be used to protect our fossil reserves." Lee Krueger, Springfield, Minn., farmer operating 3,500 acres with three married children, became interested in alcohol two years ago. Now he has a firm, Hydro Fuels, and is producing one day a week with a capacity of 30 gallons an hour. His 190 proof alcohol is used in gasohol to power tractor, cars and a heater. y Dennis Khobeloch, Mascoutah, 111., farmer, takes advantage of 100 sows and a farrow-io-finish operation to harvest methane gas. He Uses methane gas in his on-the- farm still which has a capacity of 40,000 gallons of 180 proof alcohol a year. He figures a conservative two gallons of alcohol from each bushel. He feeds wet mash to his hogs. John Askvig, president and owner of Rochelle ( I l l i no i s ) Ene rgy Development, manufactures alcohol producing facilities. He'll relate his experiences in making stills for on-farm and larger production goals. A1 Lipscomb, president of Illini Energy Resources, will relate his firm's analysis before it decided to construct major manufacturing facilities at both.DeKalb and Millidgeville, Illinois. Capacity is aimed at 5.6' million gallons of alcohol a year at each location. New Rules For Eagle Forum Essay Contest New rules are required by the United States Govern ment Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Office of Civil Rights, governing the awarding of prizes in "the $1,000 Challenge" essay contest being conducted by Eagle Forum. Instead of two separate categories, one for boys and another for the girls as originally planned, there will now be only one contest with a single list of money prizes. The deadline for sub mitting essay has been extended to March 31. Eagle Forum, a national organization interested in God, family and country, originally announced this Illinois statewide contest Jan. 24 for all high school age people. The subject of the contest is "How will E.R.A. affect the military draft and combat duty?" should evoke much national attention. '^President Carter's call for registration for the draft means that this essay contest concerns the hottest issue in the country today", said Mrs. Phyllis Schlafly, President of Eagle Forum and a strong advocate of military preparedness and fairness to women and men. "We believe that high school age students should be part of this great national debate." Every high school in Illinois, was provided with a resource packet of in formation about E.R.A. and the draft to help people writing essays to find the original source information on the subject. The contest prizes will now be awarded for just one list of winners; first prize, $2004 second prize, $150; third, $100; and fourth, $50. Essays must be 500 words or less, typewritten on standard 8Vfe by 11-inch paper. Awards will be presented May 14. For more information and to submit essays, write Eagle Forum-E.R.A.
