Rescue Work On Farm A HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 DANGER!-This arm on the hay baler can cause injury, one of several danger points on this baler, John Martin, Marengo farmer, tells two McHenry Rescue squad members, Bob Peterson, left, and Ron Schaefer, right. Martin hosted an afternoon seminar on helping 79 Rescue squad members from throughout McHenry county learn about how to extricate someone from farm machinery. This included how to start the different makes and models of tractors and how to turn equipment manually. --. (Don Peasley Photography) Representatives of several Rescue Squads in McHenry county showed up at the John Martin farm near • Marengo recently for an enlightening, if grim, education. Objective: Learn how to extricate a person from a farm machine after a farm accident. \ Instructors were farmers and safety specialists who realize most of the Rescue squad men and women from throughout McHenry county are from the small towns and cities. "We learned the program was a big help to these Rescue squad people," said Mrs. Carolyn Lillegard, chairman of the Farm Bureau Women's committee which sponsored the program. She said that danger points on equipment were shown. How to start different makes and models of tractors was discussed and demon strated. How to run a machine off, disengage the power-takeoff and manually operate a portion of the equipment backwards to aid in an extrication was practiced. John Scott, Country Companies safety specialist, and David Plocher, Ex tension adviser, led the discussion and showed films of equipment in action. These films showed ways that people become en tangled in equipment and caught undelf overturned tractors. Tractors are the No. 1 cause oi farm equip ment injuries and deaths. Plocher showed the Rescue squad men and women some of the safety devices and told how to remove certain ones in an emergency. Hay baler, combine, auger and tractor were used in demonstrations at the Martin farm, west of Marengo. Farm Bureau also expects to help rural residents become familiar with the Rescue squad unit that serves their farms. During a discussion at the McHenry County board meeting last week, it was pointed out many areas in the country are located on the fringes of any Rescue squad area service, so the correct one should be learned by the farm family. By Mary Nelson Helping Paws is very happy to report that the bazaar at the Crystal Point Mall was a success. The treasury benefited from purchases of select quality gift items that HP carries in the store. Many people expressed surprise to find that HP does have a store and that the selection is so extensive. HP Would like to have a change of location, not only to enlarge the store and office, but also to provide a mini-adoption center as well. Of course rental prices and zoning restrictions seem destined to thwart HP's every effort. So, HP must remain where the rent is right and where cats can be kept for adoption and sacrifice location. The public is invited to come in and see what has been available since the grand opening Aug. 26 of last year. HP is located at 465 Virginia street, Route 14, two doors southeast of Dole _avenue in Crystal Lake. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Confirmation class of St. Thomas church in Crystal Lake fulfilling a requirements to do a com munity project, provided much needed help in con ducting a survey for HP at the Mall. Clipboard in hand, they asked questions of almost 100 people, the results of which will be reported in next week's column. Everything went so well;- Helping Paws will be back at the same place in the Mall April 26 and 27. Adoption Policy: The fee includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of HP's choice or a reduction, from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice. No adoption is valid unless accompanied by a contract and payment of the fee through a check made out to Helping Paws. Just report it to them so thatt when the owner calls, they can refer them to you. Also call HP office for this same service, 459-2641. The Animal Control Center is the one main location to report all lost and found. They have all of the records. If you have an uniden tifiable breed that vou have lost, please visit them every few days as it is most dif ficult to find your pet over the phone unless the pet is very unusual. Cats are not held for any length of time as the county is not funded for this. If you have lost your cat, call them or come in to see daily, as this will be your pet's only hope.
