The McHenry County Department of Court Ser vices is currently seeking new people to participate in its "Volunteers in Probation- / Prevention" program. Basically, the V.I.P program objectives are to provide a troubled youth or young adult with an effective role model, companion and friend. That friend would develop mutual v trust, honesty, open com munications and share values. He would increase the individual's sense of self- worth, effectiveness and general state of happiness and serve as an advocate between the individual and his parents, school or job. Many young people are in trouble , because they lack experience and expertise in coping with pressures of home, school and peers. They also lack stable adult friends who model coping lifestyles. L_ It is believed a one-to-one relationship with an adequately supportive adult can help young people learn necessary social skills. Also, the Department of Court Services believes the community should and must participate in the solution of a community problem A new phase of "Volun teers in Probation- Prevention" this year is the expansion of the program to include volunteer services to the Youth Service Bureau for McHenry County. Referrals from YSB will be youths having problems with their families, school, or drugs. Volunteers working with YSB clients would work in a one-to-one relationship or as a group activity leader. Persons interested in becoming Volunteers in Probation-Prevention may note that the next training session will be held March 11, at 7 p.m. in the Court Services building, 2200 N. Seminary avenue, Wood stock. Michael J. Sullivan, associate Circuit judge for McHenry county, will give a talk on Court Procedure and Process. Also, a represen- :.->?ive from the Youth Ser vice Bureau will instruct new volunteers in listening and communication skills. On March 18, the regular bi-monthly meeting ^of Volunteers in Probation- Prevention will be held. Joanne Reid, Family Ser vice and Community Mental Health center represen- " ~ i lecture on Teenage Sexuality. This meeting will also be held in the Court Services building in Woodstock at 7 p.m. All interested persons are urged to attend these meetings.
