Feb. 29, Mar. 7 & 14, 1980) Polio was a dreaded disease in 1937. It struck children mostly, paralyzing and killing without mercy. The grandparents of today remember polio. Often, the parents of today do not. After the development of polio vaccine by Dr. Jones Salk, polio immunization programs so greatly lowered the incidence of the disease, peopled forgot the physical devastation it could cause. The other "childhood diseases" ran the same course. Years ago con tracting measles and mumps was a natural event in a child's life; harmless, some people thought. Reaserch has proven ch ildhood diseases are not har mless. Often vision and hear ing impairments have been traced to an early childhood disease. Other even more serious physical problems including encephalitis are complications of the so- called harmless measles. Measles cases have also resulted in death. Mumps are linked with disease of the pancreas and reproductive organs. Stressing the importance of immunization against these potential health hazards now begins in the obstetrical department of many hospitals. Before they leave the hospital with their newborns, mothers are informed that a schedule of immunization and regular infant medical checkups is important to insure good' health in later years. Many doctors recommend a beginning program of Diphtheria-Pertussis- Tetanus (DPT) im munization shots as early as two months of age. These i m m u n i z e a g a i n s t diphtheria, whooping cough and the commonly called "lockjaw" caused by ex posure to the tetanus bacillus bacteria which can enter the body through ^V.-. By the time a child is three years old, his brain has reached 80 per c e n t o f a d u l t s i z e . FORMAL WEAR RENTALS for ALL OCCASIONS Sell £ Stoual 1214 N.Green St.,McHenry A. Nine months is tuber culosis test time because even babies may contract TB. Some pediatricians recommend a TB test every year thereafter. Fifteen months is the approximate 'age of irm munization against Rubella (7 day measles), Rubella (3 day measles) and mumps. At 18 months DPT and polio boosters are given. And again at 5 years. After five* boosters are recommended every 10 years. Because so many children are immunized against th ese diseases, eliminating previous epidemics and their news worthiness, some parents consider it an unnecessary nuisance to follow the immunization program. Some recall a child having a mild reaction to the im munization and avoid the next one. Reactions to im munizations are usually mild, short-lived and most doctors will offer some medication if the child is uncomfortable after a DPT immunization. Polio im munizations rarely cause any reaction. Recently, a polio case was reported in Chicago which indicates the virus is waiting to strike. None of the childhood diseases have been totally eradicated, mainly because parents have not adhered to an immunization program. Therefore it is important for every child to be immunized. Other virus and bacteria- caused illnesses still lay children low bcause there is no preventive medicine for these problems, but when there is a way to prevent an illness, it behooves the parent to take advantage of it. A« pediatrician or physician can plan a child's immunization program or McHenry county residents can avail themselves of the county Well Child program offering free immunizations on the last Wednesday of each month in Woodstock.
