William Hazlitt The Interior Department's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) today an nounced the 1980 grant-in-aid allocation to States for work with anadromous fish. Several species of anadromous fish have been successfully introduced, and became established in the Great Lakes. Anadromous fish, such as salmon ,. and steelhead, are those which historically have spent most of their adult life in the oceans, but which returned to coastal freshwater streams for spawning. The newly hatched fish may spend up to one or two years in these freshwater streams before migrating to the ocean, where they grow to adult size. The following amounts have been allotted to anadromous fish programs in the upper Great Lakes States: State Illinois Indiana Michigan Minnesota Ohio Wisconsin The purpose anadromous Amount $ 40,000 118*600 380,600 87,800 41,500 307,500 of the fish con- to develop plans for anadromous fish on a state, regional or watershed basis. These plans take into ac count the multiple uses and stresses of the fishery resource and related natural resource programs. Research is also en couraged, especially in the area of habitat im provement, overcoming obstacles to fish movement, and improvement o$ a n a d j o m o u s f i s h management techniques. Past emphasis has been placed on the production and stocking of fish through the program, but habitat im provement and expansion are increasing concerns of the program in the Great Lakes. The results of the anadromous fish program in •Hp tipDer Midwest has been the establishment of a multi- million dollar fishery resource according to FWS authorities. Next week is position bowl and the end of the regular season, so there might still be a few changes...further down! Oh well, on with other news. High games were rolled by: J. Lescher, 218; B. Thompson, 215; T. Miller, 192; W. Farrell, 191; and R. Glawe, 183. High series' honors went to: B. Thompson, 507; T. Stumbris, 504; and B. Street, 500. Again, Ron's Rollers won the delicious pizza for the team and J. Lescher rolled enough strikes in a row to win one for himself, tho he will have to share a bit. J.K.L.'s outdid themselves and won a free drink served up with the usual smile. Only two splits were picked up, but S. Vitale with the 5-7 and E. Rogers with ' • i PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY.
