EASTER The Little Miss McCullom Lake contest, the highlight of the Beach Gals' annual Easter egg hunt and Easter carnival, will take place 11 a.m., April 5. Registration for the contest is open until Saturday, March 29, and little girls who will be bet­ ween the ages of 4 and 8 on April 6, 1980 are eligible to enter the contest. Rehearsal will take place Monday, March 31, 7 p.m., at the beach house. Girls are asked to bring the outfit they will be wearing in the contest, which should include solid colored tights with a mat­ ching or constrating colored shirt or body suit. The dress rehearsal and preliminary judging will be Thursday, April 3, at 7 p.m. The girls should wear their outfits to this rehearsal, and will be interviewed by the judges. Final judging and the crowning will be at 11 a.m., April 5, at a break in the carnival action. The new Little Miss Mc­ Cullom Lake will be ex­ pected to be available at the Halloween party, the Christmas party, and next year's contest. The Easter egg hunt will be the first activity of the day, and eggs are needed for the hunt. Each Beach Gal'is asked to color two dozen eggs and drop them off at Donna Gates' or Dawn ^Miller's house by Friday, April 4. Anyone else who wb>uld like to donate eggs may contact Donna or Dawn. v BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Tommy Olson turned two years old Feb. 19, and was guest of honor at a party Feb. 26. Present were Tommy's mom, Laurie, Todd Lasco and his mom, Sandy, and Michael Loewe and his mom, Peggy. Tommy had a wonderful time, as did everyone else. Neighbors of America, was celebrated Kv its membership on March 18. The program for the evening consisted of solos by Bob Peterson; accompanied by Dorothy Knox; a cornet solo by George Johnson, Jr., accompanied by his mother; and violin solos by Charlotte Erickson, accompanied by Mrs. C.W. Goodell. Besides being the twenty-fourth anniversary of the local camp March is also the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Royal Neighbors as a fraternal beneficiary society. Although the annual town election falls on April Fool's day there will be no one fooled in the election for there will be no opposition to any of the candidates and the number of votes cast will probably be small. The of­ ficers to be elected this year are town clerk, assessor and justice of the peace, all three candidates to succeed themselves being Charles B. Harmsen for clerk, Wm. J. Welch for justice of the peace and Jos. Schmitt for assessor. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 14, 1940) The estimated- number of persons dependent upon the five assistance programs in Illinois increased from 1,104,645 in December of 1939 to 1,135,233 in January. In McHenry county, a total of 2,740 people were on relief or an estimate percent of one in every thirteenth person. Of this number 1,412 were on general relief ; 335 on WPA; 465 on old age; 154 mothers' pensions and forty-four blind pensions. March 9, the ensembles and soloists of the local high school instrumental departments competed against other talented musicians at Glen Ellyn. Martin Baum proved the most successful with his baritone solo. He received a first division rating. There were two second division ratings awarded, one to Gordon Scholle for his violin solo for which he received a silver medal. The other second division. rating was awarded to the string quartet (Paul Schadle, violin; Gordon Scholle, violin; Roman Schmitt, violin and Warren Jones, cello). The brass quartet of Elsirss Landmen, George Freund, Gordon Scholle and Martin Baum, received a third division rating. Lund was named vice- president in charge of newspaper operations. A kickoff meeting for the annual Easter Seal cam­ paign in the county took place last week. A goal of $8,000 is sought. St. Mary's basketball team came out the victor in a championship bout with Dundee in the Four County tburnament at Lake Zurch, 34 to 32. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 18, 1970) Deborah Fair, a student from McHenry West campus high school, enrolled in the Off ice Occupat ions program, captured second place in »the state bookkeeping contest early this month in Springfield. She participated in the area contest on Feb. 3 and placed first, which entitled her to enter the state contest. All first and second place state contest winners are now qualified to participate in the national contest which is to be held in fort Worth, Tex. Another important ad­ dition to McHenry hospital's increasing supply of ultra­ modern diagnostic equip­ ment has been made possible with a contribution from the Woman's auxiliary to McHenry hospital. Army Specialist Four Charles S. Schmidt, 21, brother of Frank Schmidt of Wonder Lake, received the Bronze Star medal near Cu Chi, Vietnam. Spec. 4 Sch­ midt received the award for heroism in action while engaged in military operations against a hostile force in Vietnam. Blood Drive At MCC A blood drive will be held at McHenry County college Wednesday, March 19. Aurora Blood bank per­ sonnel will be at the college from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the day of the drive. Donors should come to the college lounge on the lower level of the MCC Main hall building. The college campus is located on Route 14 and Lucas road between Crystal Lake and Woodstock. Donors must be between 17 and 65 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in general good health. Donors are urged to eat a meal before donating; donors cannot donate again for eight weeks. Other conditions which can affect ability to donate are acute allergy symptoms, currently taking antibiotics, cold or flu symptoms, epilepsy, a history of viral hepatitis, pregnancy and a history of or exposure to malaria. "By donating blood, in­ dividuals can assure themselves and their families of having blood available in art emergency," explained Louise Lundemo, MCC health services coordinator. Individuals can also designate their blood to be credited to blood banks in any part Of the coutnry so that they can help friends or relatives in an emergency, she said. There are varying rules applying to recent im­ munizations and vac­ cinations, medications and surgical operations. Specific questions can be answered by telephoning Lundemo at the college.
