In ob^ serving ourselves and others it is easy to note statements such as "he made me angry" or "that feeling just came over me". It often appears that our emotions are a direct result of someone's actions or that they just come out of the blue. We often feel .helpless and controlled by events in our, lives and blame the outside world for our inner unhappiness. R e c e n t l y , h o w e v e r , p s y c h o l o g i s t s a r e discovering that this picture of human beings as helpless victims is not accurate. MARKETS BASKET Making the most of beef is important, especially at today's prices. Boneless beef roasts are something to consider when looking for beef bargains. Be­ cause they provide a greater number of servings per pound than cuts with bone, they of­ ten save you money. It's eco­ nomical to buy a large piece of boneless beef and prepare it as a roast. Before serving, refrigerate or freeze the extra cooked meat to use in other beef-stretching recipes. LEFTOVER TRICKS Casseroles or skillet dinners don't have to come back as leftovers the second time around. Leftovers from a sea­ soned casserole of meat and vegetables can be the base of a hearty soup with the addition of beef stock, wine and other flavorful ingredients. Add a chunk of French bread and a salad and the meal is complete. If you don't have enough leftovers after one meal, freeze them until you have enough for soup. A .L ... The things/we tell ourselves about events has a tremendous influence on how we react both emotionally and behaviorly. You may have wondered why different people may respond to the same event in a different fashion. Now you know the answer. Each person tells himself different things about that event .and therefore create a different experience for himself.- Let's take a journey inside the heads of two people who have just been criticized to see more clearly how this works. Person thinks to himself "That&!?!. Who does he think he is criticizing me? He has absolutely no right. I know I am right and hfc is wrong. Maybe if I belted him one he would learn not to mess with me." What kind of feelings do you think Person A would be creating for himself? Person 6, on the Other hand, responds to a critical remark by telling him or herself the following: "I don't need to see criticism as a personal attack. It's just useful information. Maybe there's some points I'm missing here. I'll just try to stay open and hear' what he has to say. If what he says makes sense, I'll use it if not I'll just tell him I disagree." By talking to himselfin this way, Person B creates a completely different ex­ perience of being criticized than did Person^ A and behaves differently as well. Next time you are emotionally upset, try to figure out what you are telling yourself that is creating those feelings, and then see if you can figure out some new ways of talking to yourself which will let you feel more the way you want. Remember though that emotional habits, just like any other habit, do not change overnight but require continual practice in thinking and behaving in new ways. Don't be like the person who after playing the piano once and failing decided that there was no such thing as piano playing. Learn to spot negative self-talk and replace it with positive self- talk takes a lot of practice. But surely it is effort that is more than worth the time it takes.
