PAGE 18 -PLAINDEALEE-FRIDAY, MARCH 14, IWO About the house. . . The kitchen is a good place to start using energy wisely By LIS KING The kitchen, with its line-up of greedy appliances and great demands on the homemaker's time, is a good place to start saving energy. So says the Tile Council of America, and offers some wise ideas on how to launch a cam- •lign to help preserve both the ^intlling fuel supply and your o w n p e r s o n a l r e s e r v e s o f e n ergy. • A ceramic tile floor makes wonderful dollars and sense. In winter it'll absorb and store heat effectively, and in summer it'll be so nice and cool, you'll want to go barefoot. Also, it'll mean the end of te dious floor cleaning and wax ing. Once over with a mop is all it takes to keep it beautiful. • Make sure the refrigerator and freezer are placed away from heat sources. • The hot-water heater gob bles up enormous energy, so set its thermostat low, use the cool est possible seating for the washer, and don't wash dishes under running water. • If there's any way you can add a woodburning stove, do it. Get the kind you can cook on, too. If you can't handle an omelet or delicate sauces on such a stove, at least it'll keep the cof fee or tea kettle on the ready. • Ceramic tile is the classic material for the walls and floor in such stove areas because it'll stand up to flying sparks, and soot wipes right off. Tile's good looks is an impor tant consideration, too, for (hose who consider a wood- burning stove more practical than eye-pleasing. A tile wall in bright red or yellow will be a handsome stove backdrop for a contemporary kitchen. A gleaming white tile wall with a border of decorative tile is much seen in French country kitchens and is a theme worth adopting. Neutrals, such as buttermilk, terracotta and caramel hues, are also handsome for countrified kitchens. CERAMIC TILE FLOORS' TALENT FOR HEAT RETENTION and easy care gives them a starring role in the energy-efficient Idtchen. Here, dark and light-hued tile from American Olean adds fashion interest as well as efficiency underfoot. Free standing island for food preparation, eating or a game of chess is also tiled. • Cook to save. Put small pots on small burners; cover to avoid heat loss. Only preheat oven 10 min utes, and don't use the self- cleaner till the oven really needs it. • Make your kitchen the heart of the house. Addadine-in area even if it's just a shelf or ledge plus chairs. A surprising amount of fam ily activities--from homeworic and bill-paying to crafting and dining--can well take cozy place in the kitchen, leaving the thermostat low everywhere else in the house. • A tiled kitchen table or din ing shelf will take watercolor and catsup spills in the stride. A store-bought Parsons table is very easy to tile and could well be handled by a do-it-your selfer. If your family likes chess or checkers, think of tiling it checkerboard-style. • Ceramic tile counters save personal energy: even the nasti est spills and grime wipe right off, and you can park hot pots right on them ... No need to turn for a safe surface or to bal ance steaming pots on trivets. • Creature comforts are im portant to the live-in kitchen. They're your personal touches *. . . such as baskets, greenery, a beautifully set table, a stereo system that puts you in the middle of the music. • If you want to introduce ce ramic tile into your energy-sav ing life, there's an excellent Tile Council primer on this practical and good-looking product. It's available at $1.00. A leaflet on how to install tile yourself is available at 25 cents. Write Tile Council of America, P.O. Box 2222,. Princeton, NJ 08540 Decorating Product Store Services Expanding With Home Improvement Needs The do-it-yourself decorating boom has spawned a whole new decorating product^ in dustry in the past decade. Decorating products stores now sell over half of the paint sold at retail in America. They also account for more than 80 per cent of all wall coverings sales and have in creased their floorcovering sales by 100 per cent. The major shift in distri- . bution patterns began in the late 1950s. According to U.S. Census figures, the paint and wallcovering store -- began to blossom, primarily in the . developing suburban com munities. The decorating stores not only carry paint and wall coverings, but they have added floorcovering, both hard and spft, mirrors, cus tom blinds and shades, bath room accessories, custom draperies, art materials and picture framing. Although contractors ac count for about 30 per cent of all purchases made at these booming decorating stores, about 60 per cent of al| sales are made to do-it-yourselfers. A study by the National Decorating Products Asso ciation disclosed that exactly 50 per cent of the do-it-your self market buys paint from a decorating store. It's always Home Improve ment Time at your decorating store. A McHENRY'S NO. 1 CARPET CENTER CITY WIDti CARPET COMPANY Featuring one of the Largest Carpet Displays in Northern Illinoisi 3609 W.
