But another sevfcre winter has left many homeowners with ex tensive exterior damage, and the small problems that you ignored last year now threaten to be come big ones in terms of time and money. "Many homeowners are real izing this and are repairing ne glected exterior problems like cracks in foundations, steps and driveways. "They're realizing that if they take the necessary steps now they won't be faced with the expense of a major contract ing job," nojtes Murray Stein berg, chemical research and development director at Red Devil, Inc. "Cracks should be repaired promptly, particularly in regions subjects to severe winters. Even a very fine crack allow mois ture to penetrate, and recur ring freezing and thawing bring further deterioration," notes Steinberg. The right way "But slapping concrete into a hole won't solve your prob lem," he emphasizes. "Curiously enough, concrete surfaces cannot be repaired with concrete because the coarse, gravel elements in the new mix prevent bonding between the Etch and the damaged area," points out.' For vertical cracks in con crete or cinder block founda tions, use a cold chisel to remove loose material, brush out any dust and dampen the ex posed area. Mix a good, commercial con crete patch in a bucket, adding enough water so the mixture is the consistency of thick pudding. Then cover the lowest seg ment of the crack with a foot- long strip of heavy-duty adhesive tape. Wedge a small funnel into the top of the crack and pour the concrete patch from the bucket into the crack at the top of your tape. '*• If the crack is longer than a foot, continue to tape upward but do not try to repair more than three feet at a time. Let the con crete patch set, then remove your tape. Front step repair If the top of your concrete steps has cracked, remove the loose fragments from the cavity, brush it out and dampen the exposed area. Fill the cavity with concrete patch, then tamp the mix in firmly overfilling the crack to allow for shrinkage as the water evaporates. Smooth the patch lightly with a sponge. Once it is set, make the patch flush with the surrounding floor using steel sandpaper, coarse sandpaper or emeiy paper. For fine cracks up to '/2-inch in width, you can save yourself a lot of time by purchasing ready-mix concrete and mortar., repair in a cartridge that is dis pensed from a standard caulking gun. Fill the crack with the ready- mix. Then smooth it flush with the level of the surrounding con crete using a good putty knife. Do the same for thin cracks in the concrete driveways and on garage flows. For blacktop sur faces, use a butyl /rubber as phalt formula, also available in easy-to-use cartridges. fuller Hif Window and Wall Decor Bjdel nnof 1=1 window covemos ENKRGY MANAOCMINY IS* FAMILY AFFAIR DIRECT DISTRIBUTOR DISCOUNT SAVE 20% WITH THIS ADVERTISEMENT ON A real woodburning Fireplace SAVEJNERCY/SAVE MONEY Do-it-yourselfers--We'll Show Yoe How-Step by Step! •Over 100 fireplaces in stock at •Energy:saving Glass Doors. •A full line of major brand fireplace • 12 fully finished with Masonry Fronts accessories "A beautiful selection of mantels.
