Must identify in order to claim. 344-0517. 3-26-3-28C STHi What actually happens on March 20--the day that spring arrives? The sun shines exactly half of the 24-hour day and the other half is night. Gen erally speaking, on that day the earth's axis is perpen-. dicular to the plane of the earth's orbit. The tilt of the earth mov ing from one area to another is caught when the earth's axis stands perpendicular to the plane of its orbit around the sun-and if the earth did not lean, or tilt, then there would be no seasons. Night and day would be of equal length and our weather would be affected. Spring weather conditions have forced road closings and cutbacks of service at several northern Illinois state parks until further notice. The combination of Spring thaw and rain has left the ground too soft to support vehicle traffic over many" park roads, said Department of Conservation regional and manager John Jachino. "If we don't restrict vehicular traffic now, park roads will be severely damaged and need costly repairs," he added. Typically, those parks most seriously affected are those near waterways, he said. Volo Bog State Natural area is closed entirely due to flooding. All vehicular traffic is prohibited at Chain O' Lakes / State park but visitors on foot are welcome. Portions of Moraine Hills ipipipipipipipipipipipipipipipipipipipip'i GIRL SCOUTS State park in McHenry county, Kankakee river State park in Kankakee county and Goose Lake Prairie state park in Grundy county are also closed. Further from Chicago, roads are closed at the following state parks: Apple River Canyon in Jo Daviess county, Johnson Sauk Trail in Henry county, Lake LeAqua Na in Stephenson county, Morrison-Rockwood in Whiteside county and Shabbona in DeKalb county. The campground is closed at Mississippi Palisades State park in Carroll county. Park visitors are advised to call ahead if they are uncertain of the status of a particular park, Jachino said. Ice fishermen are also cautioned that hazardous conditions are quickly developing on many inland lakes. The Valley View ^Neigh borhood Girl Scouts have been very actively engaged in a variety of projects and outings recently. Brownie Troop 211 worked with clay, making pendants and beads, which they will string on macrame belts. In preparation for an overnight camping ex perience in May, Brownie Troop 480 tested three no- cook recipes. They also made a poster for Girl Scout week, which hung in their meeting place. The first graders of Brownie Troop 150 also made posters for Girl Scout week to hang at their school They are presently preparing for an overnight campout with their sister troop 480. The girls in Junior Troop 410 are working on the Hospitality and Cooking badges. They are also planning a parents' night dinner with the girls doing all the cooking. Cadette Troop 41 recently taught songs and games to some Junior scouts from Fox River Grove. A skating party was topped off with a treat of hot chocolate and popcorn. In an effort to earn money for Thinking Day, the girls held a bake sale and spon sored a guessing contest. It was "old home week" recently when some of the cadettes from last year's troop met for bowling and pizza with members of this year's troop 41. The future plans of this active group include a camping trip and horseback riding, as a result of their success in selling Girl Scout cookies. All the girls in Valley View Neighborhood are getting anxious, with the advent of Spring, to make plans for the many varied activities that can now be held in the out-of- doors. Glenda Wiley Publicity GOOD MORNING, GLORY is Morning glories: seventh place and. climbing No other flowering vine can excel morning glories for quickly screening and covering unsightly objects. A vine can easily top a 20-ft. pole but can be kept in bounds by pinching tip growth. You'd never guess from the ar ray of color on morning glory vines that individual blossoms usually last only one day. True . . . they have but a few hours to complete pollination before they wilt. But don't grieve over their demise; a fresh new crop comes every morning. A built-in clock opens the morning glories between the witching hour and dawn. It is still pitch black when the spiral wrapped flower buds unfurl. If the day dawns cloudy and gray, blossoms will remain open but on a sunny day will close by mid-morning. The huge 3 to 4-inch blossoms come in white, pink, rose, pur ple and heaVenly blue. Knick seeds with a nail file before planting to speed up sprouting. Seed displays in a few warm- climate states do not carry morning glories. The biggest creature that ever walked the earth, (den tists say, was a dinosaur who weighed some 80 tdflt, stood 50 or 60 feet tall and was 80 feet long. Winters would not be as cold and summers not as hot, if indeed there was much of what we know as seasonal weather at all.
