Steve was trying to open the door to his home, and inadvertantly, put his hand through the glass, resulting in a severed artery. His mother, Cherie, had just left for teachers' conference when the accident happend. Fortunately, Alma and Bud had just gotten home themselves, so were able to help Steve. Nine stitches were required to close the wound, Steve now has an excuse for not attending gym classes for two weeks. He is feeling all right, and keeping busy with wood projects at the Hueckstaedt house. Shirley Phelps of Lilymoor has been hosptialized, and wishes for a speedy recovery go to her. THE CURIOUS SAVAGE Maribeth Karas, as blue- haired matron Mrs. Savage, added to a delightful production of the play by John Patrick, produced by the Wheaton college Department of Speech Communications. Faced by the dilemma of using her deceased husband's fortune for joy or turning it over to her greedy childreh, Mrs. Savage finds herself placed in an institution. The love she finds there almost prevents her from returning to the real world of jealousy, greed and need. Enjoying Maribeth's last theatrical portrayal at Wheaton, were Bruno and myself, Laura Phannenstill and Maggie Dunnagan. Watching the play two dif ferent evenings gave even more insight into the theme, "If I laugh at any mortal thing, 'tis that I may not weep". PARKLAND AWARDS Our area was >vell represented in the patriotic day program sponsored by the Parkland Junior high. Tracy Eggert received a third place award for the best U.S. Original Flag. Patriotic day reminds us all to be thankful for our heritage. WILDLIFE Lily Lake was the locale of a beautiful sight last Thur sday morning. Two swans, long necked and solid white, gracefully made their way across the center of the lake. Mildred Rowe also watched their progress. Lily Lake is "Saving a Place for Wildlife". They know farm chemicals are important to food production, but they also know the dangers in volved if the chemicals are used carelessly. That's why the Illinois Farm Bureau Women's committees have launched a new safety program: AgChem Safety Alert. It's designed to make farmers and their families more aware of the "silent" chemical hazards. "We hope the program will get Illinois farmers thinking about their "own chemical safety habits, or the lack of them," said Ellen Culver, Farm Bureau's director of family activities.
