The rescheduled meeting will be held tomorrow night, Thursday, April, 3, at 8 p.m. in the Community House, 1717 Sunset. This meeting 'is important because new board members are to be elected and serious issues will be discussed. Currently there are 457 addresses on the roster of the association membership. There were 33 people who attended the annual general meeting and five residents voted absentee. Yet, people say the association doesn't do anything. How can they? We have seven board members, a clerk, co-clerk, custodian and community house reservation person-- 11 people who give their time and talents serve the community. Thirty-eight people care enough to become involved and at tended the meeting or voted. The association, a not-for- profit corporation, was chartered Feb. 14, 1955. The purpose of this association is "to promote the civic and general welfare and to protect the mutual interests of all members and to stimulate interest in the community for the further development and* im provement of the property of the members." A newsletter was mailed to residents the end of February. Notice of the annual general meeting appeared in the newsletter. Another newsletter detailing the agenda was mailed March 14 and a notice of the rescheduled meeting was mailed March 26. It will be interesting to see how many people will attend tomorrow night. Membership in the association is open to all and Lakeland Shores. The annual dues paid by members help defray the cost of upkeep on properties and equipment owned by the association, namely East and West beaches, the boat landing, and Community House and the Community House grounds. As a member of the association, disposal rates are lower than those charged non- members. Upon payment of annual dues, members receive a sticker for their car an a pass their guests can use. Rental of the Community House is offered to members at a lower rate than non-members. Participation as an active member of the association shows interest and support of the community in which you choose to live. Information on joining or rejoining the Lakeland Park P r o p e r t y O w n e r s association may be obtained by contacting the clerk, Anne Moore (385-5430) Please care about your community, get involved. FRIENDLY REMINDERS Now that our children are home from school for Spring vacation I want to remind everyone to drive carefully. The kids are taking ad vantage of the .mild weather by bike riding and kite flying. They've been in all winter and some have forgotton how to watch out for cars, so please watch out for them. , A Also, I received some calls this week from people complaining about dogs running at large and getting in garbage bags and cans. If you are at fault, please keep your dog home, your neigh bors would appreciate it. There is an ordinance that states your pets must be confined to your property. If you are caught not abiding to this you will be fined. So to avoid an unnecessary ex pense keep your pets home. Ten years ago this nation celebrated the first Earth 'day, A nationwide teach-in that stands as the largest peaceftd demonstration in American history. On April 22, 1980, the state and national celebrations of ISnrth day '80 will take place, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the original Earth day. Earth day '80 will mark the environmental progress of the past decade and offer a look at the challenges of the next. In McHenry county, the McHenry County Defenders will celebrate its 10th an niversary by sponsoring poster contests in the elementary schools, essay contests at the junior high level, and projects at the community college. Board members of the McHenry county group will be featured at 11 a.m. on WIVS radio. The Illinois State museum, in Springfield, will serve as the host facility for Earth day '80 in downstate Illinois with the Illinois Institute of Natural Resources serving as the sponsoring agency. Sandra McAvoy, coordinator for Illinois Earth day '80, commented, "Many of the events planned for Illinois are reminiscent of the 1970 event. People of all walks of life are joining the ranks of Earth day '80 - school children, teachers, en vironmentalists, campus groups, public interest groups, state agencies, and businesses are all taking part in the festivities." Dr. Basil Hedrick, assistant director of the Illinois State Museum and coordinator of Earth day activities in Springfield, said "emphasis will be given to the accomplishments in environmental concerns of many state agencies over the past decade. Under the sponsorship of the Illinois Institute of Natural Resources, several state agencies will come together to share their work and developments in the area of environmental concerns. Some of the agencies in volved in Earth day '80 in Springfield include the Illinois EnviornmentfiI> Protection agency, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Geological Survey, the Illinois State Natural History Survey, the Illinois Institute of Natural Resources and the Illinois State Museum." These agencies working in tandem with the Illinois Environmental council have planned many activities for Earth day '80 which will offer something for everyone. There will be a ceremonial tree planting, a "Heels and Wheels" parade through Springfield em phasizing alternative, non- motorized modes of tran sportation, filnF presen tations, a puppet show, "Take That You Energy Monster," which will be performed by the Springfield League of Women Voters, as well as exhibits and booths from various state agencies on display at the museum throughout the day. On the evening of April 22, the Illinois State museum will open all of its facilities, including the behind-the- scenes preparation areas, to the general public. According to Mike Mc- Cabe, executive director of the National Citizens Committee for the Second Environmental Decade, over 150 cities in the nation have already planned events, and more are reporting daily. "This shows that environmental values will be carried into the '80s," emphasized McCabe. The message is one of commitment and hope. Citizens groups, businesses and state agencies working for a better environment will have their ranks swelled by the message of Earth day '80. In Springfield, as in all of Illinois and the nation, Earth day '80 translates into a commitment to energy and resource conservation for the 1980s.
