Her husband had been in the hospital for six weeks and her third child had just been born 12 weeks prematurely. "So I decided to go back to school to get a college degree," Ms. Dicklin said. "I had always toyed with it, but I was very insecure and extremely dependent on my husband. His illness and the prematUFe baby jarred me into actionNand I signed up for a mathjilass at McHenry County cojiege?' Ms. Dicklin took her first course at MCC in 1973 while the Community college was housed in the former IIT building on Route 14, not far from her Crystal Lake home. This spring she is student teaching at McHenry high school to complete work on her bachelor of science degree in business education at Northern Illinois university. Her reasons for going back to college after 10 years away from school may have been hers alone. But her experiences at MCC which led her to see a four-year degree and go into teaching are being repeated every day at the local Community college'. Like many returning students, Ms. Dicklin enrolled in one course each semester, starting first with math and then taking speech because it was required and she feared it the most. "I was so insecure back then that I wouldn't even go to the store by myself. But once I had succeeded in that first math class I knew I was going to go on and work to get a college degree," Ms. Dicklin recalls. "At first it was an ego thing, but now I'm glad I got into something that will pay off. Now that I'm finally there I would be disappointed if I couldn't put what I've learned to us<6," she explains. She has nothing but praise for her experiences at the local Community college. "If I had started at a four-year school it would have killed me. But at MCC there are people who care, people in your own age group. At MCC you feel like a person, there are small classes and the instructors really are dedicated to teaching," she said. Dicklin's experiences make her anxious to give advice to women who are considering going back to school. The classes she took last, secretarial science courses in the college's Audio Visual Tutorial center, are a good way to start out at MCC, she says. "While you are learning a skill that you can use you will meet other women who are going back to school. And the individualized in­ struction gives you real contact with the instructors in the AVT center," she siad. Ms. Dicklin also urges returning women students to sign up for the speech classes. "It's a great place to make friends because you're all in the same boat and you're all petrified," , she said. She attended MCC before there were special courses and activities especially for returning women. But she urges women to take ad­ vantage of those while not being afraid to take other classes at the college. "I got a lot of confidence from male instructors at the college and I found that individualized classes like the individualized English composition courses were really helpful," she said. Like many women who come back to school, Ms. Dicklin met some opposition from her husband when her school work began to in­ terfere with taking care of her home and children. But she convinced him to enroll in one class with her and it changed his outlook. "He now admits that the best thing I ever did was go back jr •'••• to school. He says I'm a changed person and I've changed for the better," she said. Ms. Dicklin plans to teach in the fall. Her degree prepares her to teach courses like accounting, business law, consumer economics, shorthand or c&ta processing. But she is also planning to sign up for an art or a photography class at MCC. "I'm going back to take my fun courses now," she explains.
