Volunteer riders are needed for the Bike-a-thon to raise funds for the world- famous research center and its battle against childhood cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Dr. Sierminski said this year's ride is being dedicated to Lisa, a I0HNI FREUND Frcund Funeral Home Serving Wonder Lake and Chicagoland Area 815.728-0233 7611 HANCOCK DR. " WONDER LAKE leukemia patient at St. Jude. "By riding for Lisa, we'll really be helping all stricken children since research is& the only way these illnesses can be conquered," Dr. Sierminski said. "We're looking for kids who will contribute some of their time and energy to help other kids live. We really need bike riders, since they are the ones who can make this Bike-a-thon successful." In the Bike-a-thon, riders „ enlist sponsors who donate a sum for each mile com: pleted. Riders who raise,$25 will receive a St. Jude T- shirt, and those raising^975 will receive a back pack said Dr. Sierminski. "We'll also have prizes for other riders." Sponsor forms will be available this week at various spots in Wonder Lake.- "You can put your muscles to work for a child's life in this Bike-a-thon," Dr. Sierminski said. "We need every bike and every rider." Interested persons can contact Dr. Sierminski, 728- 0100. They caustffthe crip pling and deathsJ of many young creatures,»especially in spring. " ...Cover your chimney with hardware cloth, unless the chimney has/already been appropriated > as a wildlife nursery.^If it has, hang a flashlight in the chimney and leave a radio playing in the fjrepjaee. Usually this will make a mother animal njtove her young to a quieter, darker location within a. few days. NEVER light a fir£ - it would ~ be disastrous for you and the wddlife. ...Put naked baby birds back into the nests from which they've fallen. Birds have a poor sense of smell and it won't hurt to return the fallen youngster. A young bird with feathers all over and any , amount of tail has probably left the nest on its own. Leave him alone and keep your dog and cat confined for several days at least. * ...Be conservative about the annual spring iclean-up of your yard. Check cavities in dead trees before cutting them down. They may contain young wildlife. Better, leave the dead trees for wildlife nurseries. A hollow tree is a wonderful, much used haven. ...Be alert for cottontail rabbit nests in the lawn, under shrubs or in your garden. If you uncover one, rake the grass covering gently back over the nest. Mother rabbit will return during the night to feed or move her babies. Do not touch the young or the nest and, again, curtail the activities of your dog and cat. • ~~ ...Forgo the use of chemicals on your lawn, and do not manicure it to the place where there is no ground cover left for wild ones. Some of us find patches of brush and a few weeds far preferable to a sterile, even green carpet with no wildlife hiding places. Ground- covering plants and shrubs are great. The fee for adoption of dogs includes the cost of the surgery from a vet of HP's choice or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a veterinarian of your choice.
