For Youth Morris Squire presents $2,000 check to the Youth Service board president, James Aull, shown at right. At a recent meeting of the Youth .Service bureau's board of directors, President James Aull accepted a $2,000 donation from Morris B. Squire, the director of the Forest Hospital foundation in Des Plaines. Last year, Squire challenged the board to reach a fund raising goal, and upon attainment promised to supplement these efforts with his con tribution. He also did a brief presentation on his interest in preventative mental health, preventative medicine and personal management, and has agreed to return to explain his views more thoroughly. A like challenge was made to the board again this year. The next meeting of the board of directors of the Youth Service bureau is Thursday, April 10, 7:30 p.m. at the Woodstock YSB office, 840 N. Seminary. The Youth Service bureau is part of the Comprehensive Mental Health Service System for McHenry County. The YSB is a private, not-for-profit human service agency and is headed by a voluntary board composed of McHenry county citizens and professionals. Through its McHenry, Crystal Lake and Woodstock offices, the YSB works with families and young people who may be experiencing difficulties in school, with drugs and alcohol, running away from home, and other problems related to their peer groups. For additional in formation, contact Joan Schratt, Youth Service Bureau for McHenry County, 840 N. Seminary, Woodstock, 338-7360. The 24- hour, toll free, crisis phone is 1-800-892-8900. This was their first experience as participants in a band contest of any kind and they entered mainly to obtain some experience in this line, with plans to enter the contest next y^ar in an en deavor to carry off first prize. Imagine their surprise when they carred off third place in this, their very first attempt at anything of the kind. " An eleventh-hour attack on the candidate for alderman in the second ward was almost dealt disaster to his prospects and instilled a little pep into the election, which, with a small amount of competition in the first ward, was a rather quiet affalir when compared to some of the city elections of the past. The friends of John Stoffel, present alderman of the second ward, rallied to his support and although he had not filed for reelection his name was written in on the ballots in competition with F.H. Wattles, whose name appeared on the ballot. If the ballots had all been marked correctly Stoffel would have won, but Wattles won by the narrow margin of .2 votes, 52 to 50. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 11, 1940) Although a record vote was expected in the primary election, a number of votes in the four McHenry town ship pecincts, perhaps reluctant to declare their vote, lowered the percentage in comparison with the number cast in 1936. There was 1,458 votes cast this Spring, as compared with 1,578 votes of four years ago. The Republicans are definitely on the rise, with 904 ballots, against 564 Democratic votes. In 1936/ there were 810 ^Republican ballots and 768 Democratic. President Franklin D. Roosevelt led his Democratic party in the McHenry county primary with a total of 2,761. John Nance Garner received only 1,360 votes. Thomas A: Bolger was a wjjnp^ in the fight for the one piace on the Democratic ticket for the legislature. He polled 8,126 votes in McHenry county while his opponent, Jack Hoff, received 2,387. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 14, 1955) Donna Barger of McHenry was one of the two winners in a recent Latin contest conducted among high school students in McHenry, Will and Kane counties. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald < Barger of Mineral Springs, she is a sophomore at the local high school. Donna arid Kathy Anderson, daughter of the Lyle An dersons, participated in the contest held in Joliet. Kathy was honored to be named one of two runners-up to the winners. This was definitely not a "What are you going to wear?" type of Easter and the weatherman played the game fair by giving warning a day in advance that Spring bonnets woiifd be in style. Anybody unpleasant enough to complain about the holiday weather needed more than rose colored glasses to take a glimpse of the world. Gloomy faces in spite of the good weather is only a reminder that the income tax filing deadline is Friday, April 15. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 17, 1970) With only a small crowd in attendance at the annual township meeting held in the V.F.W. clubhouse, the electors approved a town fund levy in the amount of $68,345. This compared to a levy of $62,160 the previous year. Expenses include the salaries of officers, road commissioner and assessor. Henry Nell; Jr., was elected president of the board of Consolidated School District 15 at a Reorganization meeting held in the administration office. The salary of the secretary was set at $900, the same figure as last year, after which Thomas^awson was reelected to thar^ost. Reduce tractor speed when turning, crossing slopes and on rough, muddy or slippery surfaces. GUARDIANSHIP The transfer of 30 severely and profoundly retarded residents of Howe Developmental center to the Office of State Guardian, a division of the Guardianship and Advocacy commission, was the first major un dertaking for the newly- established commission. It is estimated that as many as 7,000 residents^ of Depart ment of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities facilities throughout the state are in immediate need of guardianship, along with 20,000-30,000 nursing home residents. Dixon Secretary of State Drivers who travel far below the posted speed limit on our highways, especially on two-lane, ( two-way roadways, <fan be extremely exasperating. Don't let one of them irritate you to the point where you take reckless chances in order to pass. - Interstates and other busy divided highways have minimum speed limits, but two-lane state and county roads, are also heavily traveled. It's better to lose a little time rather than your temper Wait until you can see a clear stretch of road before you pass, and of course, observe all lane markings and road signs. Waiting for proper passing conditions may mean poking along behind a slow driver ahead of you for a mile or more, especially if you are driving on a winding or hilly road. Attempting to pass on curves or hills is one of the most dangerous things you can do on any road, even in good weather. Remain patient and wait until you have sufficient room to pass. Your irritation will be gone in a shorter length of time than the results of a collision. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756.) Operate and maintain tractors according to manufacturer recom mendations. Newman Club Hosts Down's Syndrome Talk The McHenry County college Newman club will host a presentation given by Dr. George Smith on Down's Syndrome research. Dr. Smith is from the Illinois Masonic Medical center in Chicago. Together with other doctors, he is presently engaged in the study of enzymes and other areas related to Down's Syndrome. The presentation will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Student lounge of the college. y In March, the McHenry County college Newman club held a 24-hour volleyball marathon which _ raised approximately $1,600.
