RICK MARTIN PHOTO What ten things contribute most to making you well? This question was posed by Dr. Joann Cannon at the annual meeting of the McHenry County Sub-Area council of the Health systems agency recently. Responses to the question covered a wide spectrum of things from good nutrition, adequate exercise, clean air , to job satisfaction, spiritual well-being, and harmonious family life. Few people listed things generally thought to be in the province of modern medicine - doctors, drugs, hospitals, or injections. These are all part of the old "health repair system" in which a person considered the matter of health only when it was threatened by disease. The orientation which Dr. Cannon is promoting emphasizes the conservation of health by positive prevention of disease. "We need to see ourselves as participants in wellness promotion instead of con sumers of health repair products", she advised. Dr. Cannon is a doctor of public health and an assistant professor for the University of Illinois Medical center in Chicago. She has developed the A.I.D.S. to Wellness Model for consumer health education. She emphasized the im portance -;of a wholistic approach to health which includes the awareness of all four human "bodies" - the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. All four bodies must be in order for an in dividual to feel well. Dr. Cannon' speech was the beginning of a Health Systems agency pilot program on "wellness". Board members and other community leaders will design and participate in a year long program aimed at promoting individual wellness through good n u t r i t i o n , s t r e s s management, Weight con trol, exercise, and en vironmental sensitivity. For additional information on the wellness task force, contact the HSA office 312- 639-0061. Wild Dogs Scientists believe wild dogs were the first animals to be tamed by people at least 12,000 years ago. The first wild dog to be tamed probably was a wolf, and it is believed that most pet dogs are its descendants.
