Coal Uranium Almost half of the electricity we make comes from coal and most of the rest comes from uranium. Both are abundant fuels. Last year these fuels provided us with energy equal to about 100 million barrels of oil. Coal is one important reason we can call electricity the Conservation Energy. Steve Smith, Club Reporter For the first time, the Illinois Sheriffs' association is offering memberships to citizens of McHenry county who wish to support the fight for more effective law en­ forcement. _ Sheriff LaMagdeleine has announced that those citizens of the community joining in 1980 will become charter associate members of the organization. The Illinois Sheriffs' association was formed in 1928 to upgrade and professionalize sheriffs' departments throughout the state. Sheriff LaMagdeleine is inviting the public to join him in the fight against the growing availability of drugs in the schools, assaults on senior citizens and the rise in juvenile delinquency. "Membership dues will be used to provide more ad­ vanced training for our deputies so that we can in­ sure the safety of the citizens of this state," Sheriff LaMagdeleine said. "The money will also be used to help educate the public on ways they can help prevent crime at the local level." "One problem we have is getting an application to everyone who might want to join," Sheriff LaMagdeleine said. "If you don't receive an application by mail, you can pick one up at the Sheriff's department". The sheriff said associate members will receive a membership card, two bumper stickers for their auto, a window decal and a year's subscription to the quarterly magazine. The Illinois Sheriff. "The membership card will not entitle associate members to any special law enforcement powers or privileges, but will identify the holder as a supporter of professional law en­ f o r c e m e n t , " S h e r i f f LaMagdeleine said. "I encourage every law abiding citizen of McHenry county to take advantage of this opportunity to become involved in the fight for more effective law enforcement by joining the Illinois Sheriffs' association when the membership letter is received," the sheriff said. VOLO BUSY BEES On May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Volo grade school, located west of Rt. 12 on Rt. 120 in Volo, the Volo Busy Bees 4-H club will be hosting a Community day open house featuring guest speaker, Dixon Brandt. - Brandt, a Miltmore resident active in all phases of scouting, has made Lake county history his hobby. His program May 4 will con­ centrate on the Round Lake, Wauconda and Volo com­ munities from Indian times on. In addition, the 4-Hers will have a memorabilia display. They invite anyone who has additional articles they would like to share with the group to bring them. Everyone is invited to hear Brandt and learn some in­ teresting facts about local communities. Refreshments will be served by the 4-Hers.
