Soph Skyhawk Baseball Team Tops Grant And Hononegah by Joe Kost Last week the Sophomore Skyhawk baseball team added a couple of victories to its record. First, the Sophomore sluggers topped a tough Grant squad, 6-4. Grant grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but key hits bv Tom PieDer. Rob Piesert and Jeff Letzter enabled the Skyhawks to get on the scoreboard and trail 2-1. Grant expanded its lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning, but again the Skyhawks struck right back. A double by Jeff Letzter and a base hit by John Tatro, helped John- sburg tie the game at 4-4. Johnsburg went on to score runs in the fifth and seventh innings to win the game, 6-4. Later in the week, John sburg topped conference foe the Hononegah Indians 3-2. Tom Pieper scored two rims thanks to his four stolen bases and Jeff Bartmann had a single, a double and a triple in the game. Pitcher Larry Dix had a season high of nine strikeouts to help silence the Indian bats. A highlight of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when center fielder Jeff Letzter threw out what would have been the tying run at the plate to give Johnsburg the 3-2 victory. That win improved the Sophomore conference record to 2-0, and overall, 4- 0. The sophomore's next game is Tuesday, April 29, at Crystal Lake South. The 6.2 mile course was laid out over flat to gently rolling hills in residential Elgin. The unseasonably warm temperatures had a telling effect on the runners, causing many to withdraw during the contest. Competing and completing in the over 60 year age division, Larry Huck's 61.25 minutes for the 10 kilo distance earned him a second place ribbon. Also competing and winning an award in his division was, former McHenry High School Coach, Gary, Collins. At least, I think about it. Riding west! on Elm St. (Rte. 120) always reminds me that the street across the tracks was known as Kilkenny Avenue in early days. V My paternal grandparents lived in a little house and all the Irish On the Avenue had little houses. Perhaps I have mentioned that a family from England moved in and there was apprehension about trouble brewing. "Plumb" Wright minded his own business and soon became a favorite of the Kilkenney crowd. "Plumb" was a wiry, little fellow and he took on a bigger fellow who gave praise to the Kaiser during World War One. One Old Timer told it that my father, the town policeman, was called to the scene of the fight. When he arrived and saw the little Englishman doing quite well: with his fists, he wasn't in too big a hurry to break it up. Baseball managers still leave a pitcher in for one too many batters when even the grandstand managers know better. Dick Rabbitt and Randy Swikle both came through with a lot of high school sports news this week after the weatherman had them stymied for a while. That we like. Since the girls sailed forth with low cut dresses, the boys decided to open a couple of extra buttons on their shirts to show off their manly chests. MAIN McHENRY Listening to the news snakes one wonder if the hey-day isn't over for states and municipalities. The purse strings are drawing tighter on federal money in grants and sharing. First it was inflation. Now it is recession. The drop-off in building and car manufacturing is sending the unemployment rate higher than a healthy plateau and is bound to af fect governing bodies. Most of us who can remember won't really worry until some smart analyst tells us a depression is on the way. Recession is one thing. Depression is another. Drifted across the lawn to the Hanford residence and found Ford sitting on the back porch getting fresh air. You can get a good man down, but you can't keep him there. Our neighborhood, especially Mrs. Hanford, will miss Mrs. Matt Brown. The great lady was called to her heavenly reward last week at the age of 89 yrs. Again, our loss is heaven's gain. Mrs. Brown was one of the neatest persons one could meet and looked like a queen in a gingham gown. Like the late Walt Freund used to say about Alvina's sister Florence, "She could scrub the kitchen, floor without getting a spot on her dress." If heaven needs tidying up, they now have the lady who can do it. As if the economy isn't bad enough, now comes word from Mr. Wrigley that the price of bubble gum is going UP SPRING SPORTS SCHEDULE McHENRY HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TRACK Sat.. Apr. 26 at LAKE FOREST ..
