PAGE > L \1NDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 2,1980 College Admission Decisions It is that time of year again when many high school seniors - the college application process behind them - wait anxiously to hear whether they have been accepted to attend a college in the fall. Meanwhile, on c o l l e g e . c a m p u s e s throughout the country, admissions officers are bdsy completing one staae^ or another of a fairly complex, sophisticated -- m often, from the public's view, mysterious process which, in the end, is designed to provide a good match bet ween student's needs* and abilities and the institution's resources and educational programs. How are these decisions made? Why is a particular student chosen over another? How are various elements, in the selection process evaluated to produce the end result -- Acceptance or Rejection? The lack of understanding of the admissions process has given rise to speculation and erroneous" conclusions that students are accepted or rejected on the basis of the admissions test, a single factor in what many ad missions officers describe as "a multi-faceted process." A recent national survey of admissions practices and policies at two and four-year colleges bears them out.' According to the survey, education records including high school grades, and courses taken; test scores; recommendations from teachers and guidance counselors; interviews with admissions staff and faculty, and autobiographical essays are among the credentials reviewed and evaluated by college admission's com mittees. The 1979 study conducted by the College board and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and A d m i s s i o n s O f f i c e r s (AACRAO), also revealed that other criteria such as student motivation or initiative, evidence of good citizenship and moral character, special skills or abilities and leadership qualities are given serious c o n s i d e r a t i o n w h e n evaluating a candidates potential for admission. "The whole admissions process is an im p r e s s i o n i s t i c . h u m a n process...to make the best judgment possible you have to read .the personal statements, the letters of r e c o m m e n d a t i o n , a n d examine the quality of the academic record. You have to keep all the criteria in perspective and finally the whole explains Molly a Harvard dean of ad- evaluate package," Geraghty, assistant missions. Contrary to the popular belief that admission test scores are the sole factor or the most important factor in admission decisions, many college admissions officers and high school counselors emphasize the fact that this is not true. "The SAT is just one component in the admissions procedure, and helps more than hinders an applicant. SAT's are not the be-all and end-all, but are good sup porting evidence." says Kenneth Nourse, admissions director at Union college. The AACRAO study confirms this. It reveals that a vast majority of the two- year and four-year colleges surveyed agree that while test scores are important, they are not the sole determining factor in ad missions. In fact, the study reveals that high school performance was ranked the number one important factor in the admissions process. Admissions test scores, ranked second in importance. According to Linden S m i t h , d i r e c t o r o f a d missions at Yale university, the SAT score of the student "is by no means the sole factor that determines admissions. The study further in-' dicates that the colleges believe that test scores are useful in three ways: (1) to review as part of the overall evaluation of an applicant's credentials; (2) to deter mine if an applicant may need special assistance in completing the colleges academic program; and (3) to include among other data in a profile to inform students of the school's academic level. In^ essence, "The SAT might be considered as a yardstick, it gives us kind of a feel for a student and his or her abilities. It gives us an idea of a student's potential" notes Brad Sargeant, director of admissions, Jacksonville university. Others involved in the admissions process, like Harry B. Scheiber, professor of American History, University of California, conclude that the role of the SAT is "lo identify able students who might other wise be judged unfairly..." Still others view the SAT as "a standardized norm to help admissions officers determine if a student...will be able to cope with rigorous college work..." as noted by Philip F. Smith, admissions director at Williams college. The College Board- AACRAO survey, entitled Survey of Undergraduate Admissions Policies, Practices and Procedures will be published in the summer of 1980. Individuals who would like to receive an announcement of the report may write to the Office of Public Affairs, Dept. A, The College Board, 888 Seventh Avenue, New York, New York 10019. • * • • What you put off doing today, you will likely put off doing tomorrow. Nearly everyone has a remedy for the troubles of everyone but his own. (Town and Country Tips By Dave Plocher) Four McHenry county residents recently graduated * from the Master Gardener training program sponsored by our office. They received approximately 30 hours of training in related hor ticulture areas such as fruits and vegetable production, weed and insect control, and maintenance of landscape plants. They will assist me at the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension service office during the busy spring, summer and fall months. I am very pleased with their backgrounds and abilities. The graduates are Jennie Maldak, Bill Barabus, and George Sloup of Crystal Lake, Andrea Garlanger of McHenry and Yusef Waahid and myself of Woodstock. Jennie Maldak will be assisting me with your calls and visits during April and May. George Sloup will be helping throughout the^ season. Weather and Crops--The Illinois Weather and Crops report for the first week of April reported the oats seeding as 3 percent com plete. The 5 year average is 30 percent. Fieldwork has been very limited throughout the state. Purdue Agriculture Meteorologist reported precipitation of .2 to 1 inch during this time. The outlook for April is above normal precipitation and near normal temperature. Weed Control--Two new herbicides, Hoelon and Blazer, should be cleared in the next week or so. Weed specialists say Blazer will be good for morning glory control but no better than other products for other weeds. It is a postemergence Wholesale Retail yaxa@e PoTTexKi & CRHTTS, inc. The grass should be in the 1 to 4 leaf stage and be uniformly covered for best control. , Here is a reminder about dini'troanalines. All placement takes place by the physical placement of your incorporation equipment. In this class of herbicides are surflan, treflan, tolban, basalin, prowl, sonalan and rydex. Incorporation--Several farmers have asked about installing spray booms between disk gangs to save a trip during herbicide in corporation. You perhaps chiseled last fall or rough plowed and now need to do some leveling before spraying in order to get good soil coverage. Putting the boom on the disk allows the first disk blades to do a lot of leveling and the second row of blades to begin the incorporation process. A second disking will finish incorporation and the seed bed preparation. We do not have research data on this technique but feel it should work. It will hold down one trip across the field. I hope that on erodable soils you can use a more conservative tillage method to conserve soil loss. Insect Trap Placed--Keith Guenther of rural Woodstock has offered to monitor the black cutworm moth trap between now and June 1. A trap is being placed in 85 plus counties this spring as we monitor more closely the flights of the black cutworm moth. \ Black cutworms can infest corn fields in June "kn<t cut young corn plants. They do not over winter in Illinois. They fly and are carried on the strong south and south westerly air currents we are now experiencing. The moth looks for green growth to lay its eggs. The resulting larvae do the cutting damage as they grow in early summer. Keith and I will keep you posted on local moth counts. Vegetable Oil in Diesels-- There are many attempts being made to conserve on typical forms of fuels. Using vegetable oil in diesels is now being talked about and tried. Our recommendation to farmers is to let someone else try it at this point. With the present knowledge available the risks seem too great to toy with that ex pensive farm machine, the diesel tractor. Forage Seeding--Early seeding of forages in the spring allows these tender crops to get a jump on weeds. They can also take advantage of the extra moisture spring usually brings. Those who planned well have the results of soil tests so they know the limestone, phosphorus, and potassium needs of the soil. They may even have applied it last fall. Where the ground dries to the level it can be worked you'll be ready to prepare a seedbed and get the forage seeds planted. A crop of spring oats or spring wheat is often used to give the forage protection from weeds and doughy conditions as the early summer arrives. Alfalfa and smoothbrome grass in a 6 lbs to 4 lbs. mixture or exchanging orchard grass for brome makes a good hay or pasture mixture. In horse pastures we recommend 6 lbs. alfalfa and 6 lbs. smoothbrome grass plus 2 lbs. Kentucky blue grass. • » * • We're now ready to turn our thoughts, once again, to good old springtime. **«* Why is it that when four women get together, four voices are always heard. Some deep-sea creatures who accidentally rise out of their depths cannot return to their habitats because gases in their swimming bladders expand, making them lighter.
