The American Heart association reminds us that regular exercise has many benefits. It improves blood cir­ culation and causes the various systems of the body to work together more ef­ ficiently. It helps an individual handle stress so he or she has more stamina. It's psychologically uplifting and relaxing. Along with proper diet, it, can help control weight. Regular exercise helps the body make the best use of fats and sugars. The appropriate exercise for any individual is best determined by an assessment of physical condition by a physician. Exercise for the healthy person should be frequent, ongoing, repetitive, using large muscles and challenging to the cir­ culatory system. Such exercise includes walking, hiking, jogging, bicycling and swimming. While hardy souls have enjoyed outdoor exercise year round, those who have hibernated for the winter may need reminding of o u t d o o r e x e r c i s e precautions. Veteran hikers and joggers are aware that hard cement pavement jolts the joints and exercising on softer surfaces is easier on the body. Uneven terrain, however, may invite a turned ankle or a fall. Running along a slanted surface for an extended time puts added strain on one leg or foot, also. Bicyclers encounter hazards in the form of wet pavement and gravel which often cause accidents. Changeable weather also needs to be reckoned with. To enjoy a long bike hike, it's advisable to take along clothes for cold or wet weather. The soundest advice for swimmers is never to swim alone. The unexpected cramp may be un­ manageable even for expert swimmers. If there is no help readily available, dry dock is the place to be. The experts say that in any form of exercise you warm up slowly and cool down slowly. Walk before you run and walk afterwards, too. Make exercise fun by exercising wisely.
