RTE. 120 McHENRY MARKET PLACE A Mrs. Hoeh wrote a letter asking me to write another article about the fairly new law regarding right turns allowed on a red light. The state of Illinois is now one of the few states that allow you to make a right turn on a red light. However, it is only legal after making a complete stop at the intersection and then checking the cross traffic to insure that the turn can be made safely, and does not obstruct or interfere with the movement of cross traffic. The city of McHenry also allows this maneuver, but there are 2 restricted in tersections in town where it is not allowed. Those two are the intersections of Rich mond road and Elm street, and Green street and Elm street. At Richmond road" and Elm street, the restriction applies to traffic traveling east on Elm when the stop and go light is red, nea> the gas station. On Green street and Elm street, the restriction is for traffic traveling south on Green at Elm, where you cannot turn right to proceed west on Elm street. Right turns on red at those intersections are forbidden by city ordinance. It is ok, however, to make the right turn on red at the other corners at those in tersections. Also, remember that it is not manadatory to turn right on a red light unless you want to, or you feel that it is ARE YOU INTERESTED? Exm, Minister not safe because of too much cross traffic or you will interfere with the cross traffic. \ Please, some of you other drivers, do not sit there behind another vehicle that is first at the intersection where a turn is legal, and lay on the horn in an attempt to force the other person to make the turn. The people who honk their horns are the ones who are wrong and could receive a ticket for excessive noise if they are caught. Here is a small note to all parents of children who have mini-bikes and go-carts and unlicensable motorcycles. These vehicles are not legally to be ridden on the roadway; and if your child is caught, he or she can receive a citation for taking them on the road. Not only are the vehicles unlicensed, (which they must be to be driven on the road), but also the child must have a drivers license to operate a legal vehicle on the road, and most ten and eleven years olds to not have a drivers license. Please do not think that because your child is a child, he or she cannot be ticketed; and he will not have to ap pear in court with you; that you both will not have to explain to the judge why your child was operating a motor vehicle illegally, and that your child cannot be fined. All of these things can and will happen, if your child is caught by the police. The only place your child can operate these vehicles is on your own property, or the property of someone who has given permission to do so . I'm sorry that my article was not in the paper the past few weeks, but I was on a far too short vacation. Starting with this article, they will run weekly as in the past.
