STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Report On Track And Field Season At Johnsburg By James A. Smith With the 1980 track and field season now underway, Johnsburg Skyhawk coach Bob Texidor says he has a lot of talented seniors and is very pleased with their performances so far. "Things are running a lot smoother than last year," said Texidor. Last season the track for the first-year Johnsburg high school was not completed, and con sequently all Skyhawk track meets were held on the opponent's home field. The school's new Resalite All-Weather track was completed this summer, and Texidor says the track is in very good condition-fast, and nice to run on. The new track is getting a lot of use from the Johnsburg com munity besides. Both the high school and junior high school boys and girls track teams use it. Helping Texidor at the coaching ranks are Pat McCrystal. the distance coach and a graduate of Northern Illinois University, and Steve Lafave. a weight and field events coach who graduated from the Un- viersity of Wisconsin at Whitewater. Texidor says his staff is doing a fine job with the young men out for the team. But even with the talented runners on the team, Texidor admitted his downfall for the season is "lack of depth". Johnsburg high, a Class A school with an enrollment of 630, doesn't have enough interested students who want to run and who want to join the team. Texidor claims. He feels, however, that as the track program grows more students will be encouraged to join. Johnsburg high will be hosting the Shark conference track meet May 13. and the head Skyhawk coach feels his tracksters can better their fifth place finish from last vear. Rick McKelvey from Cary Grove high school takes his cross country team to the Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan for a week of workouts and distance runs. Texidor is also hoping to do the same thing with his team. He will also meet with his cross country squad during the summer to check the progress of his runners and to encourage them to get involved in some summer runs. The coach is establishing a 300-mile club for something his runners can shoot for during the summer. They will be introduced to the club at a meeting soon. To be eligible to go on the Dunes (rip. a runner will have had to achieve the 300-mile goal Texidor is looking for a fairly good cross country team next fall. But the team is still very young with very few runners being up- perclassmen. Texidor says that much of the success of the team wijl depend upon how hard the runners work during the summer. The loss of some seniors will be missed next year, says Texidor. but he is still op timistic. Sports Editor's Note: James A. Go ahead. And let me know. I put those down fast, then thought about such greats as Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Roy Cam pen el la and many more. In the offensive outfield, I would put Williams in left, DiMaggio in center and Ruth in right. Ruth had the arm for right field and never was known to throw to the wrong base or in back of a runner. In the defensive outfield all three could play cen- terfield, but Speaker gets the nod. Mostil shifts to left while Cuyler's great arm belongs in right. You might want to switch Hartnett and Cochrane, both could throw bullets to second base. Both could hit. Cochrane i had the best percentage while Gabby hit for distance. Newspapers headlined shortstop Blondy Ryan's famous wire to the Giants (who were fading). Ryan, recovering from an injury, wired, "We can't lose. I'm on my way". He wasn't a big star, but his spirit led the Giants to a pennant. Umpire Bill Klem told the world, "I never called one wrong". When a batter threw his bat into the air to protest a call, the same Klem was quoted as saying,. "Young man, if that bat comes down, you're out of the game." The immortal Babe Ruth said something about it being time to quit when the baselines started to run uphill. Some of* the old ball players used to hit the night spots and cause some action. And, it was said, the treatment for a spike wound was to plop a chaw of tobacco over the cut, wrap a rag around it and go on with the game. Those were the days when 'twas said that men were men and women were glad of it. Met Leo Heimer and we covered a lot of old time history in McHenry. Leo mentioned the Opera House. The team is coached by Milt Pappas, former major league pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles, Cin cinnati Rds and Chicago Cubs, and who is perhaps best known for pitching no hit games in both the National and American leagues. As a sophomore transfer from McHenry County college, Dave is a starting pitcher for the Cardinals and has a 2-0 won-loss record in the CCIW Conference so far this year with wins over Carthage (3-1) and North Park (6-1). Dave went the distance in both contests without giving up an earned run and currently is ranked at the top of the conference in the won-loss and earned run average categories.
