Skyhawk Ace Kurt Valentin Carries Big Bat, But Teams Losing Streak Continues By Randy Swikle Johnsburg baseball ace Kurt Valentin is still carrying a big bat for the Skyhawk club, but the team s inconsistent pitching and fielding continue to spell disaster for the John- sburgers. Valentin, the 6T\ 185- pound senior has played just about every fielding position for the Skyhawks, is hitting just under .500 for the season. But even his big bat hasn't been enough to offset the lopsided scores that have plagued the Johnsburg diamond men. In the 11 games to date, Johnsburg has pounded out 53 hits but has committed 56 errors. The Skyhawks lost both games of a doumeheader last Thursday to the Har vard Hornets by scores of 6-3 and 10-0. Then on Friday, Round Lake pounded 10 hits on Johnsburg's Tigers Field to earn a 15-0 victory over the host school. Johnsburg's record at that time was 1-10. In the first game of the doubleheader with Harvard, Johnsburg's Pete Barroso scored in the second inning after reaching first base on a single. Barroso crossed home plate on another single by junior first baseman John Armon. Harvard came back in the third, scoring three runs on two hits. In the Johnsburg half of the third Dave Mauer singled and scored when Randy Wakitsch scored on a single by Barroso. Harvard, in the meantime, had scored three more runs in the fifth inning. The final score was 6- 3 In the second game, Johnsburg was "clobbered" in the first two innings. Harvard crossed home plate four times in the first inning and five times in the second inning. Another Harvard run in the third inning made the score 10-0 in favor of the Hornets. Kurt Valentin's single in the fourth inning prevented Harvard pitcher Seeley from a no-hitter. Valentin was one for two at the plate. Barroso was the losing pitcher in the first game ana Scott Valentin was the losing pitcher in the second game. Round Lake handed the Skyhawks another defeat Friday, scoring one run in the second, third and fourth innings; five runs in the fifth inning ; and seven runs in the sixth. Johnsburg managed two hits to Round Lake's 10. The Skyhawks' were scheduled to play at Marengo on Tuesday and host Hononegah at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Friday the Skyhawks travel to McHenry for a game that begins at 4 p.m. rv. i i !t More Comfort with Less Energy LENNOX Sue Wallace, Auxiliary President of the McHenry Jr. Youth Baseball League, reports that orders are now being taken for shampoo and household products by players from the league Orders will be taken through May 10. Bitterman, a senior has a 4-0 record. Moehling, also a senior, fought a hard game, only to find his record dropping to 1 win vs. 7 losses. On Wednesday, Johnsburg tennis team travels to Marian Central. They will be home Monday, May 12 to battle Crown, and Tuesday, May 13, to take on Wauconda. McHenry is scheduled to meet the same teams. Johnsburg track star Wayne Besserud demonstrates winning form. In the 22-team Lisle Invitational track meet Saturday, Besserud won a medal or ribbon for each event in which he was entered. A senior, Besserud stands a good chance for qualifying for State this year. Tigers In First Place With Double Win Over Warriors Cool Problem President Carter thinks he has to make tough decisions on energy? He should try liv ing in a two bedroom house with one air conditioner. HENNY PENNY FAMILY RESTAURANT 6:00 - 8:00 MONDAY - SUNDAY BREAKFAST SPECIAL $|00 3 eggs, potatoes, toast The Crystal lake Central Tigers jumped into first place in the Fox Valley with a pair of wins over the Warriors Friday at Crystal Lake. The first game was continued from April 17, and the Tigers came up with 7 big runs in the top of the 9th to win 16 to 9. The Warriors had a chance in the bottom of the 8th. Greve led off with a double, and then Jim Frantz screaming line drive down the first base line was caught by the Tiger first baseman. Two strikeouts followed and thus the Warriors chances for a victory. In the nightcap a 5 run first inning was all the Tigers needed as they coasted to an easy 11 to 4 victory. The Tigers are now 9 and 2, while the Warriors stand at 6 and 5. 1st Game C.L.C. 4 0 1 0 1 3 0 0 7 16-18-1 McHS 000061200 9-8-5 Anhasman, Kearley, Hanley and Overly. W.P., Hanley. Listening to the White Sox game Thursday night, we heard Harry Caray an nounce, "My good friend Ed Buss in here from McHenry". That's the way to keep McHenry on the map. Met Clarence and Elaine Freund and learned they had a great time at the McHenry Day picnic in Florida, they found the right park this year. Paul and Kay Brefeld came home a little later than the birds and reported something came up to prevent them from joining the McHenry Day groups. "Schmaltz" and Dorothy Miller are another couple to return from the Florida sunshine. Their home is 160 miles from the picnic site. The miles didn't stop them, but couldn't arrange their time to attend. They garden in the south and garden in the north. Jf we hear the news right, one half the people in this country will soon be unemployed and the other half will be on strike. Hoped we were through with wakes for a while then the ever-popular Irish "Mick" Harry Lawrence, was taken away. Then came a real blow. Cousin Dorothy Walsh passed away just when we thought she would be coming home where we could visit her. When we went to the Walsh home after her death, the site of her vacant chair didn't do us a bit of good. Death must come, but when it calls a near and dear relative, the blow is hard to take. When I mentioned to one man that blood is thicker than water, he agreed and added, "But, we should always be careful not to thin out that blood." We will miss Dorothy. She had a sense of humor and liked a good time. Loyalty was one of her virtues. She loved to travel. Now she has taken her last trip -- perhaps the most beautiful of all. Hope to see you up there, Dorothy. "Liz" Nolan, the gal who has done such a bang-up job of reporting girls golf news at the McHenry Country Club, is back with us again. She's back -- and we're glad. It is Supday afternoon as we put this together for a Monday morning deadline. Just watched our Sox get clobbered 11 to 1 by the Brewers of Milwaukee. What a re vol tin' development. The Sox were the talk of baseball during their April drive. Now, the talk is of another kind. And not kind. Never fear. They will get a fresh start. There is always tomorrow. It won't be easy to go to one of our favorite eating and watering trough places tonight and face those Cub fans. They have been ridin' high in the saddle the past week. But, we have to be brave -- like whistling past a graveyard. We can always go out in the yard and look at the beautiful dandelions. We have straw hat weather today, but the rules say we have to wait until Memorial Day to wear the air cooled numbers. If the temperature stays high, you will see one fellow breaking the style rules. Dan Justen has a hat rack in his funeral home, but plans to get rid of it .when my s up. ybodv hat? Hate to have hair blowing over my eyes. number comes ut Doesn't anybody wear a The girls are really taking over. Now comes a filly to win the Kentucky Derby. They must have known something when they named her Genuine Risk. STILL SUNDAY, BUT LATER- Took in our Brenda' Choral Club program. Old time songs took my fancy. Many talented old favorite performers gave us a pleasant evening. Just one thing -- if those on stage were as warm as the audience in this 80 degree weather, they must be credited for their endurance. Imagine running into such Cub fanciers as George "Junior" Freund, Don Weingart, Jerry Miller and Ed Blake. The only thing that saved me was the fact that their team lost two games today. My team lost only one. If their team had won the doubleheader, they would have been obnoxious. Ham Notes Why cook "fully cooked" ham? This step is advised because it seems to enhance the flavor of the ham say agricultural extension specialists at North Carolina State University. If you're planning to glaxe a ham, remove the rind first, if there is any. Glaze it during the last half hour of cooking.
