The topic this week is "Being Here Now".) So many of us in this society spend most of our tiifie either wohrying about the future or fantasizing about the past. How many times have you, for example, caught yourself visualizing dire, catastrophic events which never actually oc curred or found yourself obsessively repeating in your mind an event in which you behaved in a way you were not proud of. Both of these are examples of maladoptive focusing on the past and future and neither have any useful function in yOUr life. Many of us are forever waiting for that one future event, after which we believe we Will find that ever elusive happiness which always seems to be just beyond our reach. But that fantasized future event is like a mirage on the desert. It either never arrives or it comes and goes quickly, without relieving our thirst. The reason so many of us feel a lack of fulfillment is that we are incapable of experiencing the now moment which is always before us. For, it is 6nly in the present that life can be experienced. It can be so pleasurable to eat a. meal; concentrating fully On the ta^te, aroma, and texture of the food or -to spend some time resting comfortably under "a tree attentively listening to the sound of the breeze blowing through the branches. I am sure you can all remember similar ex periences; Times when your senses seemed ex traordinarily alert and sensitive to the things and people around you. Perhaps this moment, right now, could be another one of those moments. Just listen. Veterans' Benefits In '80 Publication PUCH MOPED, excellent condition. Asking $200. He is really nice and I don't want to hurt his feelings. How can I tell him "no" without losing his friendship? Brush-off Dear Brush-off: After a few refusals, he will get the message and stop ask ing. You have to be nice when you refuse. You might try something like "I'm busy, but thanks for asking," or "I've al ready made other plans, thanks for asking." . Dear Colleen: I am divorced and I hate it. I feel like everyone thinks I'm awful. In fact, 1 feel awful. I loved my husband and I didn't want the divorce. (We've been divorced for 2 years.) I blame myself for my hus band leaving, but I don't think it was all my. fault. Still. I feel.if I had of been what he wanted, he would not have left. I jUst don't understand and I'm tired of living like this. I just feel so terribly lonely. How can I get over my hus band and start a new life? Lonely-Ex Dear Lonely-Ex: First you need to face the fact that your husband isn't coming back. Something died between you and your hus band or he would not have left. Once you accept this fact, you can move on with your life and a good way to b«(ir> is getting out and meitiag people and making friends.
