One question that I never > heard a direct answer to was: What happens to the ' trees along the water that ' - runs through the Whispering Oaks area? The Sevin was r;not to be sprayed within 75 feet on either side of water. There are a lot of trees along < the creek that are reported to have eggmasses. What would happen to these trees? 3mThe caterpillars would eat - moths would form and lay eggs again. Next year - more gypsy moths. Hie 100 percent eradication promised by the Illinois Department of Agriculture was not possible because of that fact, unless the helicopters did not plan to abide by the 75-foot rule. " "I have some comments on your report of the May 4 meeting of the Citizens Against the Gypsy Moth at the Lakeland Park Com munity house. Not enough - coverage was given to the fact that Mayor Stanek was extremely emotional at that meeting. He said that he had given the groups opposed to the spraying three hours to present its case to the City Council. Actually, half of ... that time was given to the Illinois Department of ,r Agriculture and the United ..States Department of Agriculture to present their , facts and information. (In reference to the meeting at City Hall April 17.) He also said in reference to psychosomatic effects of spraying that some people will have a heart attack and there may be an abortion or two. Those statements stick uncomfortably in my memory. "Also, at the meeting a sign-tip sheet was offered to the public in attendance for volunteers to fight the gypsy moth. On May 10, about 30 volunteers met to wrap trees with burlap to trap cater pillars in the infested area, ^^ter one hour of wrapping, ';i!,?fsr«R,9»t of material. ^ , "The state was going to use $20,000 tb have us sprayed. The - state gave us the information we need to fight these pests, but that is where the aid stopped. Apparently, those funds cannot be used to buy enough burlap to wrap all of those trees. The caterpillars have to be trapped as they are climbing up the trees, and those eggs are hatching! If we cannot trap effectively, the moths will spread. If we fail in our voluntary program, we are going to' look ridiculous and will be blamed for the spread. Could the "powers that be" be sitting back and. waiting for us to fail? We are here to work, but we need materials. "The suspected harms on Sevin far outweigh the convenience of using it. If there are health questions about any of our regularly used convenience products, they should not be used. Somewhere in our culture, we have lost the ability to work together for the common good. And "progress" in the form of Convenient, Quick and Easy is one big contributor to that loss. "There are many political questions and implications in this ordeal. The citizens are getting involved in an issue which concerns them. To be cast aside as "emot iona l" and "Philistines" is somewhat degrading* And it is totally inappropriate." "Diane Happen" "McHenry" SEVIN VIEWS "Editor: "I refused to give the Anti- Sevin group permission to 'wrap my oaks in burlap* on Saturday, May 10, during their march on Sussex drive, although my trees are within 350 feet of the primary in festation. I think it only fair to state my reasons: "1 - This group appeared disorganized ana un professional. A task force of 30 adults should have been sufficient to wrap their 300- tree target figure; "2 - No attempt was made to inform me of their in tention prior to Saturday, to give me documentaion that their proposal might work, or to solicit my cooperation; "3 They were requesting access to my property, accompanied by minors, without offering me a compensating 'hold har mless and indemnity' agreement; "4 -- They carefully maintained anonmymity. No one wore a name tag or introduced themselves. I cannot ascertain that their organization has a name; "5 - While they wrapped trees, their, children were in cars, hanging out the left hand windows in one in stance. I watched two cars leave with neither driver nor children in seat belts. As they have alleged that their primary concern is for their children's welfare, it should extend to the proper use of the safety features of the single most physically dangerous item in genral use.
