It's that time of year again-when life begins anew and young animals are being born. It's also time for the "savage luxury" (coined by the Internatiorfal, Fund for Animals), when nursing 3- week-old harp seals off eastern Canada are torn from their mother1, clubbed, skinned alive, and left to die on the ice of exposure and trauma. The cruelty of this slaughter is incredible; the annual hunt is a terrible example-of the destructive potential of man. It benefits less than 200 sealers (and of course the fur companies), but 90,000 baby seals have died so far this year. Last year, the Canadian government put a quota on the kill at 180,000 but sealers were able to find and kill only 158,000. How long will it be before the harp seal goes the way of LONELY HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION A P.O^Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 ^(*15) 459-3641 7.) By Carla Berinett Winging low before your car, scurrying/across the road, are biras, raccoons and possums /It's a time to be careful, for many wild creatures are now carrying young and are just a shade more awkward in dodging traffic. The young already born may be slower, and the mothers not as swift as they wish, in herding them across our cemented cuts through their habitats. * We don't mean you should endanger your life, but that split second you may be able to give an animal or bird may mean its life and may also mean that a nestful of youngsters will not be or phaned and left to starve. Incidentally, it has been learned that skunks can carry rabies . for three generations. Therefore, even a cute little skunk in a pet store could have the disease. This is the only animal in which this carrying ability has been found. . The possession of almost all wild animanls is illegal in Illinois. You must have a permit to keep a wild bird or animal. . Strange as it seems, it may be perfectly legal for a pet dealer to sell you a wild creature and illegal for you to keep it. Fines run up to $500 and six months in jail. If you should find a strange creature in your window well, put a board down into it so the animal can crawl out.
