In the district meet at Jacobs last Saturday, Carrie won the 800 meter run in a time of 2:28. A strong wind dampened her efforts to improve on her season's best time of 2:23. EARL WALSH" So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR' Every day is Mother's Day, but" it isn't every Mother's Day that father gets the thrill of shooting a hole-in-one. That is just what Jack Dal ton did on the 17th hole at Hunter Country Club Sun day. Now, if his wife, Marie, can do the same on Father's Day, everything will be even in the family. Time is running out on the threatened date of the baseball players' strike and most observers think there will be a strike. It is a horrible thought for baseball fans, but most owners are rich enough to close up shop and go yachting for the rest of the season. Those owners didn't make their millions in the baseball business. They have to be in the bucks before they can afford the luxury of owning a team. Baseball fans can survive. So can the rich ball players. It is the players in the lower wage scale who will suffer. I hate strikes. Settlement always follows, but somebody always gets hurt. Reading about the Tampa Bay bridge calamity reminds me that we drove over the huge structure a year ago last March and Alvina was ready to turn around and go back when we saw it from a distance. Now comes word that a syndicated group is working on the selection of All-Star baseball players. The catch is -- they won't be ready for another three weelus. They were supposed to sit down and list the names without all that research. The players they have ac tually seen in action were the ones to be listed. v Three weeks! Huh. CALENDAR NOTE - Father's Day will be June 15th. Lamar Johnson, White Sox first baseman, is noted for his hitting. I can't see anything wrong with his fielding. He makes the plays. Have often heard thejsong "Those Wedding Bells are Breaking Up That Old Gang Of Mine". In our area it is the Grim Reaper who is breaking up the old neighborhood. George Schreiner is the latest to be taken. Through the years, 90 long years, George was a hard and speedy worker who lived the good life and bothered no man. He had a fine sense of humor. In back yard visits, it was always baseball we discussed. Thought we might get a streak going, but it lasted only one day without the mailman bringing an appeal for a donation. We must be on every mailing list in the country. SECOND IN DISTRICT-and on to state competition. The 800 Medley Relay team finished with a time of 1:56, came in second, but it was enough to advance to the state tourney at Eastern Illinois university. Having fun during practice are from left, Carrie Mortell, Terri Blume, Sue Voska and Terry D'Angelo. Traveling to the state competition with the girls wiil be coaches Don Sea ton and Pam Shaffer. By Dick Rabbitt In what was the first of an expected long rivalry in baseball, the McHenry Warriors downed the Skyhawks of Johnsburg last Friday 5 to 4. There is no doubt that this was the first of many to come between the two schools. Competition was keen, sportsmanship outstanding, and coaches Ken Swan son and Jim Meyer behaved themselves as the teams battled down to the last out. The Skyhawks scored two runs in the top of the third to take a brief lead, as the Warriors countered with two in the bottom half to knot it all up. The Warriors went ahead to stay in the fourth with a run, and added two more in the bottom of the fifth. However, the ^kyhawks rallied in the top\of the seventh for two, but U was not enough, and the local team won a hard fought 5 to 4 victory. McNish won his third game of the year against one loss, and Jim Doessel had a double to lead the Warriors. Marian Netters Finish Sports Desk 1 Second In Conference AQUANUTS We have a press release from Bob O'Neill, President of "The Aquanuts" at Twin Lakes. Could that be THE Bob O'Neill? They plan their 5th annual spaghetti dinner for next Sunday at the Fairview Restaurant (no profit). The Aquanuts will put on a water show which has been described as a good one by many McHenry area residents who have attended in previous years. The Hurrftane tennis squad finished second in the West Suburban Catholic Conference tournament last weekend. Benet took the title by a mere two points over Marian Central. Mike Kiernan lost the number one singles slot in a semi-final match; Jim McAndrews of McHenry lost in the championship match at number two singles; Oswaldo Telles also lost in the championship match at number three singles; Mike Davis and Scott Trucken- brod of McHenry also lost in their final match at number one doubles; and Chris Juzwik of McHenry and Paul Olszak lost in the semi-final round at number two doubles. On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt 1 Q With this week's sports activitv scheduled after this is written, we must go back to Warrior activities of the past $ : week, and what a week it was for the local boys and girls, Dan Boland's thinclads, although finishing a $ : disappointing fifth in the Fox Valley Conference meet, ij: : still raised some eyebrows in the area. The 4<Xh : relay team of Ron Schaefer, Keith Schaefer, Arte : and Pete Ritthaler showed their heels to the field ; established a record in the process. The Schaefers, Akins :|: ; and D'Angelo won the 800 meter relay, and Arte Akins had & : (Hie of the better times in the area this season with a nifty ;ig j state qualifying time of 22.5 in the 200 meters. Tomorrow the Warriors are at Woodstock for the j:£ i district, and the right to qualify for the state finals. East ::£ j Rockford will give the local relay teams some :£ • competition, Jbut if everything goes according to schedule S j we should see some Warriors in Charleston next week for g j the finals. $ Don Sea ton is Smiling these days, the girls qualified two ;!§ j relay teams plus Carrie Mortell in the 800 meter run. This % • young lady was limping in my homeroom all week, but on # 1 Saturday she showed her stuff, winning the 800 meter run, g ; and then coming back and anchoring the winning 1600 S • meter relay. What is that saying about the "Power of ; Youth"? This fine group of girls has the backing of all g • Warrior fans this week at the state finals, and Coach !:•:! • Seaton and Pam Shaffer should be proud of the team. The halls of Crystal Lake South are still rocking with $ > shock this week. Their highly regarded undefeated duo of ijij: j: Walters and Walor went down to their first defeat of the & ;• season in the Fox Valley finals. The winners and :j£ •: champions of the Fox Valley No. 1 doubles is our own Tim jji; ji Sabatka and Butch Pintozzi. Tim who played singles most of the season, fought off an arm injury, paired in doubles j: with Pintozzi, and the results were most rewarding. j: Credit has to be given to Coach Gary Gray who j: masterminded this change of events on the local tennis j: scene. Ken Swanson's Warriors will have finished the Fox :jij: •: Valley this week, and will play at Rockford Guilford next :j:j: =: week in the state districts. Freeport is the host team this iji; i: year. Last year the Pretzels, who won the tourney, made ijij ;i three trips to McHenry. If the Warriors defeat Guilford, :j:» ;! then they will make the long trek to Freeport until they S ij are eliminated or win the tourney. ijij I wish some school official, board member, or fan gi i: would try and explain to the I.H.S. in £ •: Bloomington that the cost of transportation may be a$ ij doom to the non income athletic activities at the high ijij i: school level. Belvidere or even a Rockford school would :& ij be better than going from one extreme (McHenry) to the ijij ij other (Freeport). My letters seem to go unanswered, but i;ij ij when you are sitting in a nice cozy office with thousands of & i: dollars' of income as a result of the basketball $ ij tournaments, you don't worry about the hundreds of $ ij schools that are trying to make ends meet. One of these ij days the "fat cats" in Bloomington will wake up. At least I £ jj am one who hopes that I will see the day that they think of jij: i; all the school districts not about their own cozy jiji i; surroundings. ijij Kofler, Moulis Take Firsts In Shark Conference Meet Ecological note: The expression used to be "Spread oil on troubTed waters."
