Who do you think we elders should vote for in the next presidential election?" -- Ira W. V • A. I'll get out.of that corner by replying this way: we ^should vote for the best man, but I don't think that man. ever runs for office. Q. " We love my husband's mother and want her last years to be happy, but she is making our lives miserable. She is 81, has had two Strokes and stayed with us when she wasn't in her own home or at the nursing home where she is now. When she lived with us she was ornery, com plained about the food and cried when we left her alone for a few hours. She hates the. nursing home, which is really a good one. My husband and I are nervous wrecks because his mother is pleading to come back with us. I don't think we could stand it. We should not feel guilty, but we do. She has adequate income. What-, do other people do in a case like this?" - Mrs. R.W.W. A. There may be many others who have similar problems with an older parent. Will readers please write to Mrs. R.W.W. in care of "Past 65". with suggestions? Q. "I want to know if a man of 70 can improve his sex drive. I'll read the paper anxiously until I get your answer." - Charles H.N. A. Again I report that some doctors and, so-called experts on sex insist that age is not a barrier to enjoying sex. However, sex drive may be lost through neglect/ Charles should see his doctor. Q. "I am saddened that children do not. privilege of learning anymore. I am i remember when poetry was part of going to school." - Pearl J. A. - I hope Pearl is exaggerating. < Q. "I didn't like your answer to Penelope W., the doctor's wife. When you say you are 'mad, damned mad to think jiave the I poetry . I can because you never know whether you can pay the cost of medical disaster,' why do you dwell on that particular disaster? Could you afford a fire, a flood, a tornado? In a medical disaster I can find help. In any of the other .disasters, I am on my own.". - Dr. R.V.T. A. Most houses and apartments are mortgaged. Trie residents in those homes can, to some extent, at least, afford a fire because the mortgage holder has insisted on fire insurance for his protection. If insurance doesn't pay flood or tornado* damage, then the federal government takes care of the bill after the - state's governor has officially declared a disaster. The doctor is too close to the forest to see the' trees. He misses the point; which is that millions of people who need medical care don't go to doctors until it ' is sometimes too late because,, although they do.have some v income, they think they cannot afford the price of medical care. And many of them can't. The poor do get medical care free. But the lower middle-income people, and the aging on pensions and Social Security, do not have the means without special insurance to protect against disaster. Q. "The letter from Joan, who wrote that she feared for her safety on the streets, prompts me to explain about the Block Parent association in Edmonton, an organization needed in every City. If an elder is in danger while walking or riding, if she or he is lost or taken ill, look for a red and white sign in the window of a residence that says 'Block Parent.'1 Then go to the front door and ring the bell or knock. The elder will receive immediate help with a call to the proper authorities or services by the Block Parent who answers the ring at the door. Block Parents, first organized to help children, has been expanded to help elders." - Sheila J. A. Yes, every city ought to have a Block Parent group. Q. "I question youradvice to have a lawyer for wills. I ;ot a biig to bring my will up o date, so I wrote it myself. My son thought I should show it to a lawyer. I did. The lawyer said I had done an excellent job. "Sometimes people can do their legal work them selves." - Max K.O. •; A. Not for me, Max. Many a lawyer htfs struck a gold mine winning a case notable for faulty or inadequate preparation of a contract, lease or a will, for examples. Do-it-yourself legal work is a potential rat trap POEMS TEACHERS ASK FOR "My father often read to us' children from a book of poetry *- 'Poems Teachers Ask For.' If readers of your in teresting column want to know where to find a poem of their childhood, tell them to look in that book at the local library." - Mrs. Robert J.G. Q. Please send me the name and address of the lady who has started the Shoe Exchange for Am putees. I love your column." - Doris I. A. The lady is Mrs. Charles H. Berger, at 360 W. Clackamas Blvd., Glad stone, Oregon 97207. Send Mrs. Berger a self- addressed, stamped en velope together with in formation on whether a right or left shoe is needed, or offered, and the size and style. Do not send shoes until Mrs. Berger gives an ad dress where <they are to go. She reports . the free ex change service is doing well. Q. "I have a hearing problem. My neighbor says I can't hea^ so good because I've ruined my ears by turning the TV volume too high. How can I find out if the neighbor is right, or just complaining for the h-- of it?" - Andrew B. A. A booklet published by the Lexington School for the Deaf, at 30th Avehtae and 75th St., Jackson Heights, N.Y. 11370 is titled "Hearing Problems Over 60." Andrew can write for the free booklet. It helped me to learn the reason why I must sit closer to speakers and have to ask people what they said. I took a test and found out I needed a bearing aid. "When I was recovering from a disabling illness, I developed an arts-and-crafts item that has sales potential as a kit. Where can I apply for a patent?" - Ruth M.H. A. Ruth can write to the U.S. Patent office in Washington, D.C. for full information on the procedure necessary to obtain a patent. Another way is to look in the Yellow Pages for the name of a patent attorney. She can phone him and ask what to expect, especially the charges ifor his service. Q. "H9W long must an elder citizen keep her old tax returns?"Mrs. C.A.L. A. The same as anybody younger. At least three years. Q. "I need to know about the safety of Money Market six-month investment for people who live on fixed income." - Mrs. Leland G.T. A. I should not advise anyone how to invest money because I don't know for cer tain the best way to invest my own. Mrs. Leland should be careful and go to at least two bankers for advice. 1 She can then determine if the two pieces of advice match up. Q. "I have tried for years to find my mother, who is Leona Johnson Pulaski, born in 1914 in Fargo, N.D. I was 5 when she and my father were separated. That Was 40 years ago. I tried to get her birth record but was told I had to have three people prove she was alive. Can you help me?" - Barbara G. A. If Barbara's mother was born in Fargo after 1900 there should be a record of her birth there. I think somebody is spoofing her if they say she needs others to prove the mother was once alive. It doesn't make sense. If Fargo has no record, then Barbara should write to the U.S. Bureau of the Census in Washington, D.C. for in struction on how to proceed, based on the 1920 census. Q. "I can help those ladies who want a skin cream- Will you please mail the enclosed letter, with information they need, to them? I am not a nut. I just want to help them because I don't think you, Mr. Riblet, understood what they wanted." - Iris B. A. Oh, yes, I did un derstand! I recommended vaseline for making old skin smoother and I wasn't being flippant. A lady down the street swears that it is vaseline that has made her skin smooth and nearly wrinkle free. I think the 15 ladies who Sarah A. wrote for, ought to save their money. The letter has been forwarded. Q. "I think the Social Security department is one of the best government departments in the country. What do you think?" - Margaret E.W. A. Me, too. That's why I invariably suggest that people phone their local SS office when they have a SS or Medicare question. It's faster, too. Q.' "I will be. 65 next year and eligible for Medicare. However, my wife will be only 62 then. Can I have my Medicare cover her until she is old enough to qualify?" - George I.G. A. No. Write to Carl Riblet Jr. at P.O. Box 40757, Tucson, Ariz. 85717 for information and advice on questions you may have as an elder - with self- addressed, stamped en velope enclosed. All questions will be answered, eHher direct or in this column. No identities will be revealed. VOTER REGISTRATION MONTH Gov. James R. Thompson proclaimed May as "Voter Registration Month," with emphasis on encouraging young people to register in time to vote in the November, 1980 general election. According to the State Boards of Elections and Education, local*election officials are contacting high schools throughout Illinois in .an effort to set up voter registration and education programs. 44MV.R1I.il •*152225122 MRIM SHAMROCK CLEANCRS Complete Dry Cleaning Service I Conveniently Located in tho McHMwyMoffcat Mata 44MW.gto.llt VV9 •16)386.1944 m
