Hold May Crowning At McHenry Church BRIGID LEAN A little May queen, Bridgid Lean, bursting with pride and excitement, was elected by her fourth grade classmates to be their representative to crown the Blessed Virgin Mary at the annual May crowning ceremony held at St. Patrick's church recently. She was assisted by two- attend&nts, Tracey Hoffman and Amy Vacula. Acting as crown bearers were Shane McCrossin, Danny Paprocki, Shari Ketchum and Connie Freund. A* guard of honor was formed by the fourth grade boys as the fourth grade girls, comprising the May court, processed into the church. The entire Montini Primary center student body took part in the procession, blending their prayers and song to honor ^Mary, the Queen of Heaven. The Rev. Joseph Teafoe, assistant pastor, officiated at the May crowning ceremony. From The Desk Of Illinois State Council On Nutrition' by Virginia Hill "Is It All Behind-¥ou?" We have a poster in our office of a hippo with a large derriere looking over his shoulder saying, "Junk food? That's all behind me." Maybe our hippo can' identify what junk food is, but there are many people who are asking what con stitutes junk food. It's like the old adage, "Everything I like is immoral, ..illegal -or fattening." I suppose dui identify some foods that way, also. I have a friend who abhors the term "junk food" ' altogether, saying, "No one thing alone is junk". Much of controversy surrounding "junk food" is based on more and more people questioning nutrition and who are interested in a better diet, fast food chains where many people eat, government hearings on competitive foods sold in schoolssj(chewing gum, candy, SOOT pop machines), and dental cavities resulting from eating too much sugar. I have a cartoon of a child complaining to his mother that broccoli, green beans, and cauliflower are junk food. Perhaps like beauty, junk food is in the eyes of the beholder. We have tended to become a snack oriented society, too There's An Answer (l»y Norman Vintriil IN'alc and Itul l i Stafford IValc} PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, MAY 21,1*9 and so often snacks are synonymous with calories. In fact, the U.S.D.A. in its new publications has not only listed the four basic food groups but has added a fifth group of' fats, sweets and alcohol. The thought in all of this is really using good sense. If your diet for a day is made up of nothing but candy bars and soda pop, you are probably eating junk food. Not long ago a guide came out that said if something was sticky, gooey, or was made up of mostly calories, it was probably junk food. A beter guide in all of this is the idea of "nutrient density". Nutrient density is the proportion of important nutrients in food to the caloric value of that food. For example, a baked potato which has 90 calories has some calcium, iron, niacin, and Vitamin C. Ten potato chips have 115 calories but are much diminished in the other nutrients, which icidentally points out another factor in proper eating and nutrition. As to a baked potato with the skin, (which v should be eaten) has not beeen peeled, sliced thinly and fried in fat; the more you cut, peel spurgeons PLAYTEX* Blockbuster Sale 20%0fl • All Cross Your Heart- bras 18 Hour Bras-style #20, #41 Support Can Be Beautiful* bras- 18 Hour Girdle - Style #2420 Exciting shades for make up for spring and summer' are bright pinks, cool corals and real reds. and cook, the more vitamins you lose. Reading the label on things can give you much in formation. If you see other nutrients in proportions to the calories, you are o.k., but if it contains primarily sugar and fat, and consequently, calories, you are probably eating food that purists consider junk. You have a choice, and it is always up to the individual what he or she will eat. If your choice, after reading the facts, is still for high calories over nutrients, then as with the hippo-it could end up "behind" you. He lives in a make-believe world in which he is the hero. But in actual life he seems to fear success or anything that requires resppnsibility. He has had opportunities to better himself in jobs and in education, but the nearer the time comes to begin he seems to get cold feet and runs away. He has ability and lots of good qualities but seems to lack . self-confidence. You can never depend on him for anything. A sad way to begin adult life! He doesn't want any advice, so all we can give him is our love and prayers. Any suggestions? A. Many yoitiig people todav react iust as vour grandson does. Why? I'm afraid we haven't asked enough of our youth; we've given tod much. And the result is that kids come to expect that life will always deal them success without effort. This is a dismal picture, but it is not too late for reversal. , Build up your grandson's confidence by urging : him to take on opportunities, small ones at first-so that he'll succeed and be encouraged by his own success. Adopt an attitude that says without words, "We know you can do it. We have faith in you." He'll get the message and be on his way to adulthood. Not happy being harsh Q. I treat my family differently than the people I work with. I am usually cheerful at work and not very demanding on those I supervise. I'd rather do what they've missed myself. At home I am strict, have high standards and expect everyone to live up to them. Help! I am not happy treating those I love with harsh words and looks. I am married with two children. Please tell me how to be pleasant to family first. A. Certainly this split personality you describe can become whole. Start by evaluating your performance at work. Do you always feel cheerful? I not, don't fake it. It takes up too much energy. Instead, while maintaining your dignity, show your employees what you expect of them, encourage them in their work and praise their success. They'll finish the job-and you won't have to. Then when you go home to your family you'll do so with a feeling of well-being which will carry 'ov$r in your relationships there. You'll still expect the best from family, but you'll do-it with love and good humor. Then, just notice the results! No time for her Q. I am married to a man that never wants to be with me alone, ever. In 30 years we have sprat one day by ourselves taking a drive and then that was my idea, not his . When the children were growing up we went places together as a family. I can't make him understand that we have a life to togethernow, and I need to be with himc- more than ever. This man simply does not have any time for me. Whenever he can he plans fun times with his boys. I just can't cope any longer. I feel like chopped liver. Doesn't he love me? Am I boring to him? Am I a threat to him? What is wrong with him, or is it me? A. I suspect that if you calmly reviewed the past seven days in your memory you'd realize that you have spent time alone with your husband. Did you have a meal together? Did you watch a TV program or read while in the same room? Of course you did. These moments count as part of your life together. Don't nag your husband for more of his time. Take the pressure off and let plans for you two develop naturally. Encourage conversation. Reminisce. Enjoy each other. It won't take long for you to notice positive results. If there is something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale, write to them at Box 500, Pawling, N.Y., 12564. Ringwood Kd., McHenry, IL. in the Vocational Education West classroom. Bobbie Hart, President Board of Education Johnsburg Community Unit School District No. 12 .(Pub. May 21,1980) Linen is one of the leading fabrics featured for spring this year. But there are many linen "look .alikes" also available. Fortunately, it's getting easier to tell the difference. * "To insure that the con sumer can easily tell whether or not a fabric is real linen, the Federal Trade Commission has issued Trade Practice Rules", says Kathi Heberer, clothing- specialized adviser with the University of Illinois Cooperative Epfension Service. The rules state: -No fabric may be labeled "linen", "pure linen" or "pure flax" or carry a name implying that it is linen unless the fabric is made of 100 percent linen. -If a fabric contains linen and another fiber or fibers, the percentage of each fiber must be stated in order by weight on a garment label or the end of a fabric bolt. -Fibers that have been treated or woven into fabrics that resemble linen in ap pearance may be labeled "rayon linen", "silk linen" or whatever the non-linen fiber may be. -A fabric is mislabeled if the name contains "-lin", "- lyn" or similar suffix., Linen is made from the flax plant, Ms. Heberer explains. Fibers within the flax stalk, are bound together with a gluelike substance. These fibers have to be lossened then separated by a process called "retting" (Dutch for rotting) before they can be manufactured into linen fabrics. Linen fabric is strong and durable. II absorbs moisture readily and dries quickly, therefore linen garments are cool and comfortable to wear. Ms. Heberer says that linen can be either laundered or dry-cleaned depending on the dye, finish and garment design. White linen can be bleached with chlorine-type bleaches. If laundered,, linen gar ments must be ironed while damp at high ironing tem peratures. Pressing along creases and' folds such as pleats and hems, may weaken the fabric in these areas over a period of time. One of the characteristics of real linen that some people find annoying is that it wrinkles readily. Wrinkle- resistant finishes eliminate this situation to a large degree. However, such finishes can make linen less absorbent, therefore less comfortable. When considering the purchase of a linen garment or linen fabric, read fiber- content labels and care instructions carefully. . HOSPITAL NOTES MC HENRY Admissions: Nancy C.
