(Florida recently ex perienced its first damaging tornado.) They seldom .expand to more than a mile or two in diameter, are often only a few hundred yards wide. They may bounce over the surface of the earth, touching down with devastating force every so many miles on a course several hundred miles long, or they may travel only a few miles. The velocity of wind is always high in a tornado, possibly several hundred miles an hour. The tornado develops when a heavy air layer somehow winds up atop a light layer of air, in an occluded front area. As the heavier air breaks through, a circular motion of great force develops. This occurs most fre quently in die midwestern and western states, such as Kansas and Nebraska. Only .in the central pUias of Russia do tornadoes Uke those in the United State* occur' so Tornadoes cooes at atgbt or \m dayMght. in the day. the HOT DOG I The baseball season is start ing - just in case you've been wondering where to go for a buck and a quarter cold hot $ * * First, I want all of you to , ' get up and walk out to your cars and check the back license plate for the little red sticker attached there. Make sure that if yours has the month of May stamped on it, you get right out and buy the new sticker, because the one you have now is only valid through May 31. If, on June 1 you are stopped, while driving with a red May sticker, you will receive a ticket for having no valid registration for your vehicle. The rest of you with stickers for months other than May, such as June, September, November, should write down somewhere wHere you will- remember it, that your sticker is going to expire soon, and plan to purchase the new sticker well in ad vance. If you buy the sticker through the mail, allow at least a month before you get the new sticker in the maflr At one of the banks in town you can get the sticker right away and another business in town takes about one week. Just plan ahead. Have you all seen the new handicapped parking signs around town? The city placed them in key locations, such as on Green street near Elm; the medical group building; and on Riverside drive near Pearl street. Have you also seen someone parking there that did not have a handicapped plate or the temporary sticker in the window and didn't belong there? Have those people who parked there illegally seen the fines imposed if they are caught there by the police? In case you haven't, the fine is now $10, and that is only if you pay the fine right away ; otherwise it is much higher! I don't know about you, but the ten dollars I save parking in the right place and walking that little extra distance sure takes the ' sting out of my "flat feet". Or how about those of you Who left your vehicles parked on the city streets overnight and violated the parking ordinance for 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. parking? Or parked in a no parking zone, posted either by a sign or the yellow curb markings? - Those fines have just recently gone up from $2 to 35 each! Better plan on being a little more careful; it has gotten rather expensive to make these errors. I'm sure*, everyone has seen the new lane dividers the state put on Front street on either side of Elm street, near Overton's and the First National bank, and the one that was removed from Elm street west of Front street to make a left turn lane. Also I'm sure you have noticed that the stop and go lights at the intersection have been changed too. These changes have really changed the traffic flow at this intersection, for the better, I feel. The one lane divider at Front and Waukegan has just about eliminated the , major cause of accidents there, and people cannot now come off of Elm street eastbound and take the cutoff and go east on Waukegan. People on Waukegan cannot turn left onto southbound Front street, and now it is easier to make a left off eastbound Elm street to go north on Front street. These changes are good, but be careful as you ap proach the area until it is completed, and you are familiar with the changes. It is going to be easy to get messed up there until all the construction is done and everyone is familiar with the new changes. I'd hate to see anyone meet our new TEAM car because they were involved funnel-shaped cloud can be seen at some distance, traveling not too fast, usual ly. and one can often get into a storm cellar or lie flat in a low place in time to escape if in their path. in an accident. The car is nice looking, but not that nice! For you people who drive pickups and other trucks which require a safety sticker, watch the expiration date on those too, It is very easy to forget to have them renewed, and there is a fine and citation for not having an up-to-date sticker. School will be out soon. Watch out for the children in e the streets; the ones who don't listen to their parents about not playing in the street. They are all full of energy and ready to start their Summer vacation, and may not be as careful as they should. See you next week. PARENTHOOD GUIDEBOOK By Nancy Moore Thurmond (author, Mother's Medicine,. Pub. by Win. Morrow, N.Y-.) As a parent, you can curb maltreatment of children by reporting any case of sus pected child abuse.^neglect. or mistreatment to your local law-enforcement authorities, your " community chijd- protection agencies, or the center in your city that pro vides around-the-clpck serv ices to children and families in crises. If a child-abuse situation is acted upon quickly, the child can be removed tem porarily from the abusive parent and the volatile envi ronment. The hope in child abuse cases is to restore the family unit and get it to function properly by altering the abusive nature of the parent. A national organiza tion. Parents Anonymous, has been established for those abusive parents who, knowing they have a serious problem, seek to change their ways and pull them selves and their families back together. For a child, it is difficult to replace "Mommy and Daddy" and "home." The ideal situation is for the child to be returned to his parents, who, reformed and healed, can provide him with the lasting sense of security and PAGE 19 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 23, lMf love that he needs and deserves. A hastily delt blow can have a life-long impact on a child, whether physical or psychological. Never leave young children alone in the tub, and try to keep any youngster from roughhousing in the bath. The maximum tax rate allowed on earned income for private individuals is 50 percent.
