Kathy Barry, starting this year at third base, played heads-up ball with seven put- outs. Mary Ellen King pit- \ / The McHenry Plaindealer 3812 W. Kathy Rogers led off the top of the seventh with a triple, and was driven in by a sacrifice fly by Mary Sue Parker. Mary Sue also in tercepted a fly ball from the outfield and picked the runner off at second resulting in a double play. It was almost an instant replay as St. Regis had a similar double play the previous inning. Good sportsmanship was displayed on both teams. Wayne's batted out two triples by Denise Fidler (who also made a running catch) and Sharon Marunde, wjiiie Nolan Liquors came back with a double by Cindy. Karen Anderson made great defensive plays for Wayne's keeping them on top and with a great whole team effort, they were able to maintain the lead. Tom Weyland has organized them into a winning team..for at least one game'. Brake Parts Beats V.F.W. Brake Parts with the help of three new players, Cis Morner, Vicki Kopsell and Marie Mellum downed the V.F.W. 9-2. Cis was 2 for 2 with a walk, Vicki was 2 for 4, with two long and hard hit fly balls, and Marie was robbed of a line drive bet ween third and short. Also back after an absence of one season is Dorothy Kupstis. Dot went 3 for 4 in addition to two great catches. (Dot still refuses to wear a glove, but with hands like that, who needs one?). Mary Mclnerney is again player- coach and started off with a home run driving in three runs. Linda Lent was at her best offensivley as well as defensively, scoring two runs and allowing six hits. Injured on the last play of the game, Diane Wilson playing third, tagged the advancing runner out, after receiving the throw from Vicky Kopsell. Hope Diane recovers soon, along with Debbie Thornton's head. River Shannon Takes Sunnyside River Shannon started off the game with a boom and sent twenty batters to the plate, scoring fourteen runs in the first inning. After that, Sunnyside settled down and retired River Shannon quickly. The game went uneventfully until the fifth inning when Julie Oeffling lead off with a double. Lora Jacobs then moved her to third with a hqrd smash' to left, and a deep fly ball past the left fielder by Brenda Bingman scored the run. D. Morowski was the winning pitcher giving up only one walk. The lights are still not hooked up so this weeks games will be held at West Campus and Petersen Park. Wayne's West End vs. Sunnyside "Old Bridge Sweteps Gearraaster 22-0 Another good defensive game with excellent pitching by Kathy Joyce and Karen Shastal kept Gearmaster from scoring. Although Gearmaster played well defensively, they just couldn't get their bats going. Old Bridge was led by Sharal K o e n i g s e d e r , K a r e n Gutekunst and Kim Martin who all doubled. Alice Hoffmann added her triple, while Mary Martin came back again with a homer. RDG Nips Four Winds Tight defense again, h e l p e d c o n t r i b u t e t o t h e game as RDG beat Four Winds 6-5. Connie Saunders was kept busy as she made 7 unassisted outs. Chris Tokarz hit a three run homer in the fifth for Four Winds, but RDG held on. A special hello to Dee Carstens who wanted her name in the paper this week. Palce Bowl Beats Ed's Rental In an extra inning game, Palace Bowl was able to ease past Ed's Rental 6-5. Despite a 3 run homer by Diane of Ed's Rental, and a triple play, Ed's Rental was unable to score again after being tied 5-5 in the 7th. Aggressive base running was the key, as Peggy Dennis from Palace Bowl scored the winning run after hitting safely. * Scarlett Dennis made a nice grab that carried her over into a sommersault, but she still could hang onto the ball. Winning pitcher was nanci Mondry. Oak Park out hit McHenry Limo 10-0. Besserud, who was seeded sixth state-wide, ran a qualifying time Friday of 1:50.1. The Skyhawk standout was hampered in the championship race with a leg injury, but he still managed a very respectable time of 2:01. This vear Besserud has helped set several school records at Johnsburg. He was a member of the two-mile relay team, and the mile relay team which both set records. He also set the school record in the 800 meter dash. Besserud went further in state track competition than anyone else in the area. DIVOT DOLLS M.C .( . Cathy Greer and Maddie Holmes teamed up to be the low net winners in the one- day "Do-over" event for the 18-holers on Ladies' Day at McHenry Country club. Low Gross in the same event was won by Joan Buss and Mabel Smith. All the rest of the gals were vying for the same event, some coming close, but not close enough. Putting seemed to be the nemesis of many of the gals, with sand traps creating several frustrations. Title of "Sandy" of the week goes to one"of our newest members, Dorothy Wood, although Barb Weber and Frieda Miller tried to lay claim to the dubious honor. Only one birdie was reported for this week, that executed by Joanie Buss on No. 4. Cathy Greer's birdie on No. 11 last week was omitted in the reporting -(oops!). One of our newer golfers, Cathy is making tremendous progress with ho* game and is looked upon as the gal most likely to succeed in dropping the most strokes from her handicap. With the lush growing weather of this season the trees and bushes on the course are bursting with their fullness - and, on oc casion, present a few problems. Hence, the title of "Tree-trunk Busscher" goes to Letty B. who made a connection with many of them, all eight or ten of them on the second hole. Half a dozen chip-ins were noted: Maddie Holmes oh No. 1, Jean Napier on No. 4, Dotty Shadel on No. 5 (last week), Georgette Lewis on No. 10 and Barb Weber on No. 13. They claim their chipping was a salute to Bernice Dolce as a welcome back after her four-week layoff due to surgery. The Nifty Niners' Scratch and Scramble Event found Martha McCrary and Melanie Frett taking first place in the partnership deal with Carole Barnicle and Inez Burelli taking second place. Inez also had low putti of 15. Millie Wignall ap parently locked up her best shots in the trunk of her car along with her keys. That does happen sometimes. The traveling team suf fered its first defeat (and, hopefully, its only one) at the hands of the ladies at Chapel Hill last week. This week the McHenry gals travel to Thunderbird in Barrington where they hope to redeem themselves. Good luck, gals! This week's bridge tournament found Peg Anderson scoring 4,190 points to be top winner. In second place is Char Zwissler with 3,380 and Barb Lysett in third place with 3,310. Someone's dealing some mighty fine hands! Next week will find the 18- hole golfers getting down to some serious golfing when they play their annual Flag- Day event and also start Ringer, while the Nifties will be playing "Carefree Golf". 'Til then. Happy Golfing! Liz Air condition your home with an ^=¥lirtemp CENTRAL SYSTEM These units have excellent E.LR. ratings for economical operating cost.
