May 30.1980) Your Police Department | by Officer Jim Fitzgerald Public Relations Officer McHenry City Police Phone 385-2131 Since Summer is almost here, I'd like to take a few minutes to remind you all about securing your homes when ever you leave for the weekend, or even for the day. Summertime is the time of year that burglaries pick up the most, since so many people go away for the day or the entire weekend, and their homes are empty. These few tips should help keep your homes secure from burglars while you are away. If you are going to be away for the -weekend, the best protection is to tell your neighbors that you are going to be gone, and ask them to keep an eye on your home. They are familiar with the area and the people in the area, not to mention your home, and they can be the best thing around to keep strangers away from your homes. Tell the neighbors where you're going, and leave a* phone number, if you can, where you can be reached in case of an emergency. Also, tell them when you are going to leave and when you will return. Before you leave, take a final walk around the house and be sure that all the windows and doors are locked, especially the sliding glass doors if you have them. The best way to lock a sliding glass door is td place an old broom handle in the track on the insde of the doors so that even if the burglar gets them unlocked, he cannot slide them open. Do not pull down all the shades, or close all the curtains since you want to make the house look as normal as you can. To help make the house look like someone is still there, set some of your lights on timers so that they go on and off as if someone was inside the house doing it. Also, put a radio on a timer to turn on and off the same way, so that there is some sound coming from the house. Almost everyone has either the TV, the radio, or the stereo going when they are home, so it helps deter the burglar when you are not there. If you are going to be gone for more than the weekend, say a week or two, stop delivery of the newspaper and the mail. All you have to do is call the paper to stop delivery, and then go to the post office and stop the mail, or see your carrier and tell him. The burglar knows what's going on jyhen he sees several newspapers on the frdnt step, or the mailbox full with a week's mail. If you want, call the police station and ask for a house check for the time you will be gone. You will have to come to the station and fill out a short form for us, and then we will hand check the entire house every night that you are gone. Please remember to call us when you return! Pet owners, please remember to have your pets get their rabies shots and tags for their collars. Also remember that it is against the law to allow your pet to run loose around the neigh borhood. Not only is it against the law, it is not very neigh borly, no one wants to have to clean up after your pet. Please keep pets in your own yard. See you next week.
