Ztf - t*LAINi>fc.ALER - FRIDAY, MAY 30,1980 What Just One Person Can Do The "Staples" in Our Lives Since the dawn of civilization human beings have been eating bread, which is nothing more than water, flour, yeast and a little salt. These simple ingredients have been used in combination over and over again for centuries. I The familiar loftf of bread, warm from the oven, is the staff of life, water, flour, yeast and a bit of salt are all a person needs to produce a little miracle of the loaves. And when the bread becomes stale, it still serves YOU CRN BHNK on it! Presented by STATEBANK OF RICHMOND member F.D.I.C. Entrepreneurs are the spark it takes to ignite the fire of free enter prise. Not surprisingly, entrepreneurs as a group, are very excep tional people. It takes a special kind of dedication and talent to conceive a business idea, provide the money necessary and to keep it successful through some very lean times. The two most often cited factors in suc ceeding with a business of your own are ability and commitment. The number one reason for failure is money . . . the lack of it. By the time a new enterprise has run the course to the extent that lack of money is a critical problem, it is of ten too late for a banker to help. Usually, the time your banker can be of most assistance is in the planning stage of any new business. The more aware of the possible pitfalls of a business ven ture, the more likely you will be to avoid them or be prepared to conquer the problems. Your banker is there to help, whenever possible . . You Can BANK On it! us well; we can make bread crumbs. Bread crumbs were once understandable things. But no longer. I went shopping recently and look from the shelf a harmless looking package with the innocent title: "Bread Crumbs - American Style." One would lend to think it had only the four basic elements, but no. In my hand was a symbol of the modern industrial and chemical revolution. "Contents: made from enriched bleached flour, (malted barley flour, ferrous sulfate, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin), water, whole wheat flour, rye flour, whey, yeast, partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening (may contain soybean and-or palm oils), salt, soy flour, yeast nutrients (calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate), dough conditioners (may contain one or more of the following: ethoxylated mono and diglycerides, sodium and-or calcium stearoyl-2-lactylate, polysorbate 60, succinylated, monoglycerides, potassium bromate), mono and diglycerides, calcium propionate (a preser vative)," r Can you believe it? "Bread Crumbs - American Style" were as chemically saturated as a box of moth balls. The scandal is not limited to bread. Every package of food in the supermarket, if you check it, has had a chemical overdose. By extending the shelf-life of their products with artificial additives, the American food manufacturers have been increasing their profits, and denaturing our food. Man- made chemicals, untested for long-term affects on humans, have been used continuously in suspicious combinations for decades. When something like this happens we are all guilty. As Herbert Butterfield wrote, "Behind the shocking crime at the center, the blaihe goes to the vast numbers of in dividuals, each guilty of small derelictions of duty or petty compliance with vested interests - each gravely responsible, though astoundingly unaware of the importance of what he was doing." We are all custodians of God's good earth. One day the Lord will say to each one of us, "Draw me up an ac count of your stewardship." (Luke 16:2) "When I was hungry, did you give me potassium bromate, ethoxylated mono and diglycerides and am monium sulfate?" Problem Today's economic problem is how to prevent our elastic currency from becoming a stretch of the imagination. -W.O.W. Magazine. Flies, mosquitoes and deer flies are annoying; but yellow jackets, bees, wasps, hornets and fire ants are the real troublemakers. Anyone may have an allergy to the sting of one of these insects. Having known allergies to foods, dust, etc., does not make one person more sensitive than others to Ihe sting of an insect. However, wearing per fume or perfumed toiletries makes you a likely target because an insect's sense of smell does not discriminate between the seductive scent of a flower and the artificial floral scent produced by man. Yellow jackets are at tracted to the odor of some foods and fruits. Sensitivity to insect bites is indicated when reactions such as increased swelling and physical distress become marked after being bitten. Treatment by a physician or local hospital emergency room is essential then. Special kits are available for individuals who have experienced allergic reactions to insect bites. They contain an tihistamines, epinephrine and tourniquets which require instruction in order to use thfem appropriately. People who are highly sensitive to insect bites may be wise to wear Medic Alert bracelets or necklaces (applications available from McHenry Hospital Outreach Department). All bites should be washed with soap and water to kill the bacteria that is often left by the insect. Honey bees leave a venom sac when they bite which should be removed carefully, to avoid spilling. Mosquitoes are attracted to blood, urine and sweets. They also are drawn to the carbon dioxide scent emitted by the human body. There is some evidence that people who take vitamin B1 neutralize the carbon dioxide emitted, thus discouraging the insect. Mosquito bites are un comfortable bpt relatively harmless. The swelling produced by the bite will respond to ice packs and, if physician - recommended, antihistamines. The chief problem with houseflies is their con tamination potential. Flit ting from garbage dumps to unprotected picnic food, tbey become the typhoid-Marys of the insect world. A few precautions taken in advance will keep fun in your picnic.
