ACCREDITATION On May 15, Menard, Logan and Vandalia Correctional centers * received ac­ creditation from the Com­ mission on Accreditation for Corrections. This action gives the Illinois Depart­ ment of Corrections, with a total of five, the nationwide distinction of having the most adult correctional centers with such ac­ creditation. To qualify for the three-year certification, each institution complied with 465 of the most stringent corrections standards in the nation. The Vienna Correctional center and the Menard Psychiatric center were accredited in May 1979 and February 1980 respectively. * * * * Politicians who appeal ^tif your selfish interests are seeking your vote. A state animal health officer is urging Illinois dog owners to make sure rabies vaccinations are current, and is calling for more ef­ fective stray control programs in Illinois. Dr. David Bromwell, chief of the Illinois Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal Welfare says those steps are essential in light of the state's rising incidence of rabies. Most of the cases have occurred in skunks, however in recent days 15 children were exposed to a rabid dog in a schoolyard in downstate Herrin.. The dog, which was salivating and showing other signs of rabies, was brought under control at the request of concerned parents by an animal control officer. None of the children was reportedly bitten by the dog, but 15 children will now u n d e r g o t r e a t m e n t f o r possible rabies exposure. Officials now fear that other dogs may have been exposed to the rabid dog. Illinois law requires rabies vaccination for all dogs over the age of four months, unless confined at all times. After initial vaccination* dogs must be vaccinated annually-or with a three- year vaccine which gives three rather than one year's immunity. Bromwell says the three-year vaccine may be economically ad­ vantageous and is as ef­ fective as the annual vac­ cine. Bromwell is also urging local and county officials to implement better stray control programs. In addition to being potentially dangerous to children, strays pose both a rabies and general health threat to both rural and urban residents. Ma jor threat for spreading rabies comes from skunks. Figures compiled by the Illinois Department of Agriculture indicate that more than 90 percent of this year's r&bies cases are attributed to skunks. Skunks account for 195 of the 220 cases of rabies reported thus far this year. For that reason Bromwell recommends that in­ dividuals avoid all contact with skunks. Captivity of skunks is illegal-except by special permit. ' Many skunks carry latent or dormant rabies virus which may become active at any time, creating the clinical condition. 16th District Nurses In Dinner Meeting The annual meeting of the 16th district Nurses! association of Lake and McHenry counties will be held Monday, June 16, at the Fox Lake Country club. The 6:30 dinner will be followed by a meeting and program at 7:30. Father Buckley New At St. Mary's Church Father John Buckley has joined St. Mary's church, McHenry, as assistant priest. Father Buckley was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was ordained in 1952 for the Diocese of Brooklyn and has worked in many areas of the priestly ministry. He was a member of the faculty of the Seminary of the Diocese of Brooklyn for 10 years. For another 10 years Father Buckley served as a parish priest. In addition, he has worked for five years in the field of alcoholism rehabilitation and for three years as a hospital chaplain.
