I am more than just doth shaped into a design. Iamthereftigeof the World's oppressed people. I am the silent sentinel of Freedom. I am the emblem of the greatest sovereign nation on earth. 1 am the inspiration for which American Patriots gave their lives and fortunes. I have led your sons into battle from Valley Forge to the bloody swamps of Viet Nam. I walk in silence with each of your Honored Dead, to their final resting place beneath the silent White Crosses, row upon row. I have flown through Peace and War, Strife and Prosperity, and amidst it all I have been respected. My Red Stripes...symbolize the blood spilled in defense of thin glorious nation. My White Stripes...signify the burning tears shed by Americans who lost their sons. My Blue Field...is indicative of God's heaven under which I fly. My Stars....clustered together, unify 50 States as one, for God and Country. "Old Glory" is my nickname, and proudly I wave on high. Honor me, respect me, defend me with your lives and your fortunes. Never let my enemies tear me down from my lofty position, lest I never return. Keep alight the fires of patriotism, strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy. Worship Eternal God and keep His commandments, nnrf I shall remain the bulwork of peace and freedom for all mankind. I am your Flag. No village, town or city, or metropolis should be without them, for kids must know that every now and then there la such a thing as a man who is something more than other men." Such a statue was erected in Washington, D. C. for John Ericsson, a Swedish- born inventor who during the Civil War designed the Union Warship Monitor. In a historical naval battle of the Civil War, the* Monitor of the Union navy clashed with the Merrimac, a Con federate vessel with iron plates built over its sides. The Monitor, too, was cover ed with sheets of iron. The battle of the ironclad boats in Hampton Roads, Virginia changed naval warfare for all time. In 1926 the U.S. Postal Service issued a S cent stamp at a tribute to Ericsson. The issuance was in conjunction with an unveiling of a statue of Ericsson by the Crown Prince of Sweden May 26 in Washington, D. C. We already know that there is a right "force" in this hemisphere, which makes rivers cut more sharp ly into their right bank, which makes projectiles veer right and which makes ocean currents swirl to the right. Weather is affected by it. These tendencies are re versed in the southern hemi sphere, where things veer to the left. As for trees, this claim has never been proven. Many believe the grain leans right in this hemisphere. But the answer to the question above must be qualified: maybe. Study the grain in trees you cut, or see, which have been cut, and see what you think. cwei'woc : /// '//// /////////////////////////////', //// / / /. /. //////' /////// v J BLOOMING 0 HANGING BASKETS SALE 7 Days Only - Friday thru Thursday June 13 to 19 SAVE *8.00 10" Baskets •Wax Begonias •Impatiens •Geraniums Reg.
