PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALEH - FRIDAY. 13, 1980 HKMMIN(> PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 •(815)459-2641 By Carta Bennett Fish feel pain just as do humans and other creatures. In studies at the Medical Research Council in Cam bridge, England, it has been found that a chemical called - Substance P, which tran smits pain in the nervous systems of mammals, is also present in fish. In light of this, a panel scientists concluded that all vertebrate animals, including fish, are capable of suffering pain, whether they are warm-blooded or cold blooded. It follows, we feel, that all the beautiful, voiceless creatures of the sea have this same capacity to feel pain. Albert Schweitzer felt that we would learn why the world is set up as it is, with one species feeding upon another, only after passing on from this life. He went ahead to develop his famous theory of '•Reverence for Life", which says that each creature's life is as important and valuable to it as mine is to me. He said that only after much thought and consideration should we sacrifice one creature's life for another . and then only with the very minimum of pain and suffering. He realized that some scientific experiments with animals are of value, but abhored and condemned the way most of them are carried out, with vocal cords cut, often no anethesia, and repetitive to the point of boredom on the part of the experi men tors. Has our blind dedication to science and technology paid off that well? Or is it time to run now more in the directions of ethics and philosophy regarding all of us creatures, including our Earthkin in the sea? Safety Hints OSOOOOOBOOOOC By Alan J.Dixon Secretary of State With school out for the Summer, this is 9 happy time for youngsters, but it is also a dangerous time. Bikes, scooters, roller skates, mopeds, surf boards and other mobile con veyances propelled by eager children of all ages appear on our streets, roads and even highways as soon as weather permits. These fast-moving adolescents usually have their minds on things other than their own safety. They pop out, on foot or wheels, from unexpected places, often into the path- of a vehicle which is traveling at the posted speed limit. Drivers should make certain their reflexes are equal to the speedometer reading and that, their vehicles respond to reflexive action. Parents have a major responsibility too. They should' teach their children the rules of the road - to follow safety precautions and know traffic signals and signs. (A copy of the rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Bike rules are also available. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111. 62756.) Your by Officer Jim Fitzgerald F*ubli<f Relations Officer McHenry City Police Phone 385-2131 As you all can see, the intersection of Front and Elm streets is finally done, and the mess that we all had to go through while driving past the corner looks like it was worthwhile. The in tersection has now been repaved, and marked for proper lane usage with large arrows and new traffic standards. Gone are 8 the "bumps" and cut pavement, uncertainty about which way you can go and from which way you can turn and not turn. I'm glad it is finally finished, as hopefully, the traffic jams and numerous accidents there will now be almost eliminated. We have been receiving, many calls lately, ever since the new fine amounts went into effect regarding dif ferent parking violations. The most common call is about the 2 a.m. til 6 a.m. parking on city streets; in, other words there is no overnight parking allowed on city streets. The only exception will be if someone calls the Police department and says there will be a vehicle parked overnight at a certain location for whatever reason there is for the overnighter. If you call, the information will be passed on to the area car and he will not issue a McHENRY - O'HARE LIMOUSINE SERVICE Serving Entire McHenry Counl "We h Cwfort ii a Lixirins AitMOfeile' •DOOR TO DOOR SERVICE •Delivery to 0'Har6 •Pick-up cot O'Hare •Parcel Delivery Available •Service to Other Destinations Available BY RESERVATION ONLY 7 DAYS A WEEK CAUL 344-4466 WAYNE AMORE, Owner parking ticket to your vehicle. However, it-he does make a mistake, simply call the police station arid we will correct the error. Also, there is no parking on the grass in front of your house when the car is parked between the sidewalk and the curb of the road. Although this is in front of your hosue, the grass within, this area belongs to the city as an easement and no parking is allowed there. Another common mistake is to park your vehicle on the wrong side of the street, facing (he oncoming traffic, or parking so the driver's side of the vehicle is next to the curb. Also, watch for no parking signs and the yellow painted curbing where there is also no parking allowed. These tickets can cost $5 if you are caught parking improperly. 1 Also, watch the fire lanes in the Market Place in front of all the stores. There is no parking there in case of a fire so that the fire and-or ambulance can park nearer to the emergency. I am receiving questions now and thai about the proper method for making a right turn on red at in tersections which have traffic signals, so I thought I'd go over this again for those of you who do not understand the way it should be done. When you approach a traffic light that is showing red, you MUST STOP FIRST COMPETELY!! That seems to be the biggest mistake. You cannot do what I call a California stop, or just roll slowly through the light. After you stop, you must check the cross traffic and be store it is clear, so that if you do go ahead Mid turn right, you will not Interfere with any of the cross traffic. The cross traffic has the right1, of way at the in tersection, and should not have to alter their movement to let you make a right turn. , Then, If there is Drift a sign that forbids right'turns on red posted at the corner, you may turn right on the red light. Remember that you must both stop completely, and not interfere with traffic that has the right of way because of the green light they have. Should you fail to do either of the above, you can receive a ticket for running a red light. As to the posted signs that do not allow you to make right turns on red, there are only two places in town where you cannot turn. They are on Elm street, eastbound, at Richmond , road near the firehouse; and Green street, southbound at Elm street near the bank. Right turns on red are allowed at all other in tersections in town where there are traffic signals. Also, you should remember that a driver does not have to turn right on red unless he wants to do so. There could be many dif ferent reasons for not wanting to turn right, and the people behind him should not try and force him to turn right by honking their horns at him. The honkers are wrong in this instance, and can receive a ticket for unnecessary noise. See you next week.
