I can read a continuous story and stay awake, but give me a newspaper and, even if the articles are interesting, I drift off to slumberland. Sort of sleeping sickness. Take a newspaper to bed with you, prop up and start to read. Your head will soon be in your lap. You won't need sleeping pills. We sat with some mighty classy "fillies" while wat ching the Belmont race Saturday. Wow -- were they excited! It was a big letdown when their favorite, Genuine Risk, was nosed out by a mean old boy horse. But, the girls can wait. Genuine Risk is still Queen of The Fillies. When Whitey Herzog was named manager of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, local fans speculated quickly about Chuck Hiller joining him as a coach. My response is: Do ham and eggs or beer and brat- worst go together? Whenever Whitey moves, Chuck isn't far behind. Chuck is Whitey's kind of man. Believe it or not with all this rain we were able to play some ball. In the Junior division due to timely hitting and heads up defense the Toddler Shop defeated Wally's Bike Haven 33 to 7. Even - got on base that day but special mentions go to Mary Kay Winn for her double and Jenny Eagon for her single. Catcher Linda Kath and outfielder Michelle Martinez teamed up for a nice double play. Don's Dairy Frost has really been scoring high this week. Although they have not won as many as they would have liked, manager Jim tells me his girls are really hitting up a storm. Adam's Bros. Steel managed by Mary Ann Knaack is thus far un defeated. She reports that her team has really been playing some super ball. During their game against Don's Dairy, pitcher Kim Smith hit two homeruns and was pitching a fantastic game until she ripped open her finger. Sheri Knaack finished pitching for her. We will be in Milwaukee that night (an ordination - not a ballgame) so will have to look forward to next year to join the crowd to celebrate the memory of our friend Joe. Maybe I should remind you to make your reser vations for golf and dinner. They always have a big crowd. If the Cubs would just listen, they would back up the truck and make some changes. If you are going to lose with super starts, why not lose without them? The McHenry American Legion home opener Tuesday night was typical of most early season baseball games; pitching dominated the hitting. For McHenry pitcher Joe Bellich, his five--hit per formance was not enough to keep Genoa from bunting its way to a 2-0 victory at Mc- Craken field. After striking out five Genoa batters in the first two scorless innings, Bellich gave up the two runs of the game in the top of the third when Genoa's Don Mathey tripled to left center field after one out. McCuDoch followed with a perfect suicide squeeze toward third base. Mathey sewed from third as McCulloch was thrown out at first. A single between short and third, and a lost-in-the-sun double over left fielder Mike Dillon's head scored the second Genoa run. After the third inning, Bellich calmed the Genoa bats down and ended the game with 12 strikeouts, a personal high. Genoa pitcher Dave Clark however, gave up only four hits and fanned 16 McHenry batters. A wasted bunt single by catcher Ken Hoff, two singles by third baseman Kurt Valentin and a single by Gregg Mc- Pherron was all McHenry could muster.
