FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June ). 1940) The Community Methodist parsonage on Main street is having its face lifted this week and will present a much improved appearance when the new small front porch which is replacing the larger porch along the front of the house is completed. As usual the work is being done by several generous and ambitious men of the church who are giving their time and efforts to complete the much needed improvement. This and other im provements and refur nishing will be accomplished during the year both on the Methodist church and parsonage in honor of the one hundredth anniversary of the organization of the Community Methodist church in McHenry. The 26 students of the eighth grade at St. Mary-St. Patrick school,, were presented with their diplomas when com mencement exercises were held in the high school auditorium. The McHenry State bank has announced that effective July 1 it will make a 50 percent increase in interest ,rates paid on savings deposits. The board of directors feel that the continued fine return from loans and investments .makes an increase possible. The bank is very pleased to be able to reward its hun dreds of savings depositors who through their regular saying habits have kept the savings deposits well in excess of four million dollars. Dick Wissell, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wissell, distinguished himself by being elected Section 6 FFA vice-president while at tending the twenty-seventh annual state FFA con vention. Over 2,000 of the 18,000 FFA members in Illinois met at the state fair grounds at Springfield to transact the annual business and to witness the presen tation of awards. P.J., (Phyllis, president of Lilymoor association), hosted a yard party on May 25 for Dan. Fifty-three people came to visit, remember, and enjoy each other. Good games of all kinds including volleyball and Polish horseshoes, good food, and good talk, all made for a memorable day. On June 1, Dan returned to New York where he is working with magazine photography. He took with him news of family and friends to be shared with his aunt and uncle, with whom he lives. Dan's friends and family, especially his mother and father Joan and Ivan, wish him success in the Big Ap ple. SO SORRY June 14 was a Saturday not a Sunday, as stated in last week's column. John LaBarbara, The Covered Wagon, was not responsible for the "Sunday", as nowhere in the description of the CB'er picnic was that word used. My apology to anyone who went to Petersen park last Sunday, expecting to enjoy White Cat, Gopher, and all the other CB'ers, only to find the picnic was all over, with just chipmunks and squirrels around. MAPLE TREE DAMAGE Alma Hueckstaedt called in regard to the destruction of maple trees in our area. Ruth Freeman had noticed the tops of some dying off. A call to the McHenry County Cooperative Extension Service of University of Illinois in Woodstock, gave general information Tlie culprit is an "or namental insect". The eggs are laid on the branches shrouded in a white covering, then develop into caterpillars which com pletely strip the leaves off the branches. A spray can be used to destroy the insects. It, is not known if these are as deadly to the trees as the gypsy moth. STORY TIME Pre-schoolers are welcome at the McHenry Nunda Library district on Lily Lake road, Tuesday mornings, 10:30 to 11 to listen to favorite stories. The readers are Ramona Neeley, Diana Pickett, and Chris Watkins. If the weather is pleasant, the children sit outside while listening to "Frog and Toad", "Gingerbread Man", "I never saw a purple cow" and other fun stories. The library is now open Monday afternoons in ad dition to Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Call 385-6303 for information. COURT SYSTEM Wednesday mornings are always very busy at the Circuit Court traffic proceedings in McHenry. Last Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Maribeth Karas, Maggie Dunnagan and I sat in the court room, listening and waiting for a special case to be called. Maribeth had asked for a bench trial to refute a citation she had received after an accident on Route 120 and Crystal Lake road. We were impressed ciy the courtesy, attention and quiet authority of Judge Haskell M. Pitluck throughout the long morning. Prosecuting Attorney, Ms. Regina Narusis, conducted the questioning in a thorough and understanding manner. The many cases were handled efficiently and as quickly as possible, giving those of us waiting a good example of our legal system at work. And how did Maribeth make out? She was exonerated.
