P; m - * • • • • • ̂ L £H FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 26, 1930) A b o u l t w e n t y - f i v e representative business men assembled at the Bickler hotel to attend a dinner as guests of the Chicago Motor club, the object of the Meeting being to discuss and get an opinion of the local men regarding the proposal of the club to secure the widening of the state high­ ways leading out of Chicago, to a width of 40 feet which would provide four lanes. The Chicago Motor club proposes that the state, during the years of 1932 and 1933, widen those arteries pleading to the north, south and west from Route 22. Harold Knox was elected grand knight of the local Knights of Columbus chapter. Wonder Lake and McHenry battled each other and the heat when they met on the MAACS field in a county league battle, with* the MAACS wringing out a 10-6 victory. Schoewer started on the mound but gave way to the heat in the fifth and Tonyan finished, although the heat was bothering him considerably at the finish. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 20, 1940) A class of 29 children and adults were confirmed at St. Patrick's church by the Most Rev. Edward F. Hoban, Bishop of Rock ford. Con­ firmation was first ad­ ministered at,the Richmond Catholic church £nd then at St. Patrick's. Our summer visitors are rejoicing with local residents this week over the spreading of oil on many of our dusty roads throughout the township. Asizeable sum of money has been raised by popular subscription and added to an allotment of the commisioner's funds to enable McHenry township to better road conditions. A Lily Lake boy, Julius Gilman, who is a student at Lane high school in Chicago, has invented a diving helmet which he made from an ordinary hot water'tank. The air is pumped into the helmet from a compressor, with a . oTie horsepower gasoline motor and' an air tank which contains the air from the compressor, The helmet proper is made from the top of a hot water tank, the air hose coming from a garden hose. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 23, 1955) - In Springfield Mark Zimmerman of McHenry emerged one of' ten state finalists in the Ford tractor plowing contest conducted among agriculture students throughout Illinois. He was edged out of first place by Roy Weisenburger of Adams, 111., who won a new tractor as grand prize. Erection'is expected to start soon on the new Zion E v a n g e l i c a l L u t h e r a n church which will be built on about five acres of ground formerly the Earl Brown property on Rt. 120 west of McHenry. The new church will be in modified con­ temporary architecture. The exterior will be of buff-face brick, trimmed with Indiana limestone and the interior of weigh-lite block trimmed also with Indiana limestone. Members of the building committee are Stanely W. Vycital, chairman, Warren Kuhlman and Albert Grever; the building finance committe. R.G. Ullich, chairman; L. H. Booster, Edw. C. Wagner, and the pastor, Rev. G.A. Lobitz. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 26, 1970) x The first in what promises to be a series of legal maneuverings in the murder case of Mark A. Smith of McHenry unfolded in Circuit court. Smith's Attorney, Harold McKenney. of Crystal Lake, present a motion for a change of venue on the grounds that it would be impossible for his client to obtain a fair trial due to prejudice incurred through news media, etc. Tom Parsley of Crystal Lake was appointed prin­ cipal of Marian Central Catholic high school f o l l o w i n g t h e r e s i g n a t i o n o f - Rev. Philip Kennedy. Parsley is married to the former Patricia Hogan of Ring wood. Elizabeth "Dee Dee" Weyland, 17, a petite, vivacious, recent M.C.H.S. graduate, was acclaimed the 1970 Marine Festival queen before a standing-room-only crowd in the V.F.W. clubhouse. Chosen first runner-up was Linda Zimny, 17, and second runner-up was Linda Ann Blundell, 18.
