More blues skies, sunshine and comfortable tem peratures continued to be with the ladies of McHenry Country club as they began their four-week Match Play tournament Tuesday. In Class A Dot Freund got the adrenalin going early in the match and overwhelmed Betty Phalen with her app- proaches and putting to close out Betty on the 16th. Other results in the same class were Harpling over Busscher, Cooney over Wilkins, Turner over Leisten and Fidler over Schmidt.. Mohan, Yopp and Nolan drew byes for the day. Recovering from her slump of last week Carolyn Harger did come back to take the day's match from Jean Remke in Class B. In the same class it was K. Lundquist over B. Leight, Koehler over Dolce, Mabel Smith over Zwisslef, Weber over B. Smith, Oja over Marlene Smith. Daily recordings had Virginia Turner taking Low Net in Class A, Mabel Smith in B, Maddie Holmes in C and Dorothy Hollander and Toots Gerstad tied in D. For Low Putts it was Dot Freund in A, Mabel Smith in B, Maddie Holmes in C and Betty Wayman in D. . Two birdies recorded were those of Carol Cooney on 16 and Barb Weber on 11. Rita Sayler had a nice chipin on 17 while the shot that lightened the entire day for Faye Stewart was her sinking her approach on the mountainous No. 11. Songbird Shirley Smith was warbling her happiness over having her best score to date. Only a couple of unhap- pinesses were mentioned. Mil Hansen coul dhave cried over earning the title of Sandy - most of the frustration being wrought in the traps on No. 7> The Poplar Leaf Cluster was awarded to Jean Napier who found trees all over the" course. Eunice Hatch had her troubles with trees, also, but confined them to the stand of evergreens on No. 10. Probably the trick shot of th$; day was executed by Betty Phalen* on No. ,12. Finding herself up against the fence, her practice swing went back only to stay in mid-air, having gone through the fence. Just minor repairs are required. From the Nifty Niners, who played their Selective Five Holes, comes the following results: In Flight A Janet Conway took first while a tie for second was scored by Shirley Smith and Mil Hansen. Mil also had Low putts in that flight. In Flight B Melanie Frett came in first while Ethel Hartman came in second. Low putts were rolled in by Melanie, also. And, Mil had a nice chip-in on No. 2. This Friday the travelling team will be hosting the ladies from PiAe Crest and, needless to say, continued good wishes are for their go- go-go spirit to bring them another victory. Bridge results for the day found substitute Liz Nolan getting the cards and tallying high score of 4,980. In second place was Alvina Yopp with 4,230 points and in third Nancy Wilkins with 3,320. With the hope that the weather man continues to bring blue skies, the gals will be back next week and so will this column! Til then, Happy Golfing! Another ballplayer had bad luck on the softball diamond as Dave Sundby "caught" a ground ball in the side of his face. Dave, the league's president, will be out for possibly the rest of the season with a fractured cheek, a broken nose and eye damage. St. Regis gets a salute from this writer after their 34-4 drubbing on Monday. Starting with only nine players, losing one with a pulled'hamstring (he stayed as catcher) and just finishing the game -1 mean when you are down by 30 runs it is definitely em barrassing...hats off to . the green and yellow "for standing up to that kind of punishment." John Michaels made what looked like a sensational catch in right center off the bat of a Regis player. The umpire ruled it a trap, however, instant, replay has since shown that Michaels did make the grab. Nice going John!
