They till the soil, kill insect pests, and certainly know flow to clean up after picnickers. Next time you're on a picnic, spend a few moments studying these interesting little creatures. Thinking about an outing this weekend? Consider a boat cruise. It's a great way to have a leisurely day, taking life easy. And at noon, you can stop along shore and share a deli cious picnic lunch . . . with a bunch of ants! Ants can find a picnic basket almost as soon as you set it down. Their sensitive antennae home in on sandwiches and po tato chips, and they're not bash ful about inviting themselves to the party. « Despite having poor table manners, ants are beneficial, and Mercury outboards' out door recreation department sug gests you consider their positive side before condemning their anti-social behavior. Primarily, ants are soil tillers. They keep dirt loose and pro ductive for the growing of many native plants and agricultural crops. They also kill insect pests such as termites and the larvae of many destructive beetles. Scientists have cataloged more than 15,000 species of ants around the world. They range from inch-long army ants in the tropics to small ants that herd other insects and "milk" them, much the same as a dairy farmer. Some ants even take their "livestock" into their nests dur ing winter and care for them. There is no way to. avoid ants on a picnic, but you can take time to study their way of life. Spend a few moments watch ing your sandwich crumbs dis appear in the green jungle where ants live, and you'll understand better their value to man. @. butter and honey can take the place of traditional bologna on rye. When preparing sandwiches, tomatoes, relish and other gar nishes should be kept to a minimum. They cause a soggy mess. Mayonnaise spoils easily and should, therefore, also be used sparingly. If necessary, how ever, butter on both sides of the bread will prevent sogginess. An alternate solution is to carry all ingredients separately and prepare the sandwiches at the picnic site. Sandwichescan be prepared a few days in advance and frozen. If removed from/fne freezer in the morning, they can be ready to eat by lunchtime. Potato and corn chips, dry- roasted peanuts and granola are all delicious snacking foods. They can be prepared at home, additive and preservative free. Potato chips can even be made from sweet potatoes for an unusual taste treat. And, both kinds can be frozen up to several months. eye-ball contact, agility and speed are challenged as you race around the court in pursuit of the game point, endurance is in creased, and satisfaction is gained when that final match point whizzes by your oppo nent.
