- .11 - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25,1980 College Honors National Scholarship To Johnsburg Youth Wins Scholarship JOHN MOEHLING John H. Moehling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R. Moehling, Johnsburg, was awarded a 1980 four-year college scholarship from the Catholic Order of Foresters (COF) the Order has an­ nounced. COF, a leading Catholic fraternal benefit society in the United States, annually awards ten four-year scholarships of $750 a year or a total of $3,000 for four years. A member of St. John Court 96, Johnsburg, Moehling is a third generation Forester^ He competed with high school seniors from 28 stales and the District of Columbia in the 13th Annual COF Scholarship program. Moehling, graduating first in his class at Johnsburg high school, was president of the National Honor society, was an Illinois State Scholar, a member of McHenry County Honors band for two years and received academic high school honors for seven out of seven semesters. He represented his school in physics and calculus on the JETS team, assisting the school to win first place in McHenry county. Moehling plans to study electrical engineering at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Ill- II: 1 educators. In selecting the winners, the boardtakes into account not only the college entrance examination scores, but class standing and grades, kinds of school activities and interests. The program, which is available to children of employees of American Can company and its subsidiaries in the United States and Canada, , has awarded over 450 scholar­ ships to studnets who attend colleges of their' choice throughout the U.S. and Canada. Cynthia Van Cleave, of McHenry,-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Van Cleave, has received a four- year college scholarship from the American Can company foundation, it has been announced. The American Can company foundation is a non-profit organization that con<- tributes to educational, charitable and scientific causes. A certificate of the award, one of 48 such scholarships offered this year by the foundation, was presented to Cynthia by George H. Ames, controller, at American Can's Technical center, 433 North Northwest Highway, Barrington. As the daughter of an American Can company employee, she was eligible to compete for the scholarship, ih^d was chosen from 344 highly qualified candidates this year. Cynthia is a graduate of McHenry West high school, where she was active in the band and chorus during the past four years. Also, she is a member of the National Honor society and the Spanish Honor society. She plans to enter De Paul university in the fall. As in the past, scholarship applications were reviewed by a board of prominent Mark D. Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Hoffman of Flint drive, Barrington, received the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Northwestern university at com­ mencement exercises June 14 in Evanston. One hundred sixty-four M.D. degrees were con* ferred by Northwestern President Robert H. Strotz at the 122nd annual com­ mencement. The university- wide commencement was followed by a Medical school convocation at which the oath of Hippocrates was administered by Dean James E. Eckenhoff, M.D. A 1972 graduate of McHenry Community high school, Dr. Hoffman holds a B.A. degree in biology from Northwestern. He will enter residency training in or­ thopaedic surgery at the member hospitals of the McGaw Medical center of Northwestern university. The University of Iowa held Spring commencement ceremonies recently, awarding some 2,480 degrees. President Willard L. Boyd of the U of I delivered the charge to the graduates. Among students from the McHenry area who received degrees in the Spring commencement were BBA, Earla Marie Marshall, Marketing; Jerry John Pepping, Accounting, with highest distinction; ESPH, Charlene Marie Weingart, with distinction. Area Students Earn Degrees At Judson Robert F. Holas and Maureen Patricia O'Brien of McHenry have received bachelor of arts degrees from Judson college, Elgin, in. June commencement exercises. Both are Human Institutions majors. Judson college is a small, Baptist<affiliated, Christian liberal arts college. Close to 500 students attend classes on the 70-acre campus.
